My husband and I have a Basenji, or rather she has us. She is about 6 1/2 years old and Basenji's are not like other dogs. They do their own thing, command attention, don't come when called, etc. Since I married my husband about 3 years ago, Mandy (the dog) and I have come to have a fairly good relationship.
The other night my husband and I were sitting on the couch watching television and Mandy was stretched out on the other side of me. I reached over to pat her, and grabbed her shoulder a little bit to play. Apparently, she didn't like that because she growled and snapped at me - hitting my hand with her teeth (not biting). I think she realized what she had done because immediately she jumped to her feet and came over and put her face up next to my face and looked at me with those big brown eyes and wrinkled brow as if to say 'I'm sorry, Mama'. Although I get aggrevated with her when she tears up the garbage, etc., I thought it was kind of cute.
Anybody else have any cute animal stories?

I think it's funny at some of the noises she makes. Those of you that don't know - basenji's are the barkless dogs. They can't bark, although they can howl, whine, whimper and cough (which sounds like a bark). Oh - and she snores - loudly.

That is really cute. Two weekends ago I got groceries and they came in the obligatory crinkly plastic bag. I carried them into the house stuck the milk in the fridge (thus emptying one bag) and then went to the potty. In that small space of time, Bob, my wild child cat. Managed to get tangled int he bag. He raced around the house knocking things over as Dylan and Eddie chased him. He ran headlong into a wall and then crawled under the bed. I got down on my hands and knees and found him with his head through the handle and the bag jammed down to his tummy. I kept calling him so I could free him from the bag and every time he moved he thought the bag was chasing him so he would drop to the ground and shake. It took him half an hour to creep to edge of bed so I could get him loose. He's cute, but not real bright.

I have two dogs, a border collie and a shitzu. The shitzu (Oscar) likes to play with the border collie (Kobe) and is almost constantly jumping up on him and and following him all over trying to get him to play. What is funny is that Kobe will put up with Oscar's antics for the longest time, but when he gets tired of it, Kobe will start chasing him around the yard, catches him, puts him on his back and starts tossing him around (not hard). You have to be there, I guess, but it is really the funniest thing to watch. My son sits there watching them laughing his little head off, as do my husband and I.

my dog and i play hide and seek-- my mom will hold my dog and cover her eyes and count to 50. in the meantime, i run all over the place, opening and closing doors, tryign to outfox her before i choose a spot. one time, instead of hiding low, i stood on top of the fireplace (one of those room dividing fireplaces that are raised from the floor about 2 feet). its a rock fireplace so i was pressed against it as i stood there tryign to camoflague myself in it. when my mom reached 50, my dog sprung into action, yapping as she flew around the house and outside tryign to find me. it was a few minutes before she started to get worried--she had already ran past me about 5 times! she started to whine and kept goign back to my mom as if to say "i cant find her!!!" my mom kept telling her where i was (duh, liek she understood) and she would run off again in search of me. she came back into the room where i was and finally caught wind of my sent. she got up on her hind legs and started sniffing the air. she even went so far as to get on top of the sofa bed that was open, stand up as tall as she could and sniff. a couple seconds later she walked to the fireplace again and this time looked up and found me! boy was she a happy dog!!! (by the way, she stands about 7 inches tall! hence, why she had a hard time spotting me not on her level)

I know this might sound mean, but it was funny. Many years ago, we had a Gordon Setter, Bailey, who was born blind in one eye. I used to play with him out in the yard. I'd run away and stand up in a doorway on the same side as his blind eye. Of course, he would take out after me, but he ran right past me every time without seeing me. But he was a good boy and he loved to play the game. (Sigh)

I have a long haired Chihuahua named Toby. He is my baby and he knows it. He likes to ride in the car, eats hot dogs (no pun intended b/c he really is a hot dog! ), likes to go swimming, and wakes me up every morning to let me know its time to go outside. He is so spoiled. He gets real bacon treats too.

My dog sleeps with my husband and me every night. In my neighborhood, they're already setting off fireworks. Last night at about 1:00 AM, the fireworks didn't wake but my dog barking at the top of his lungs three inches from my face did. Violently. When I was sure I wasn't going to expire then and there from a heartattack, I then had to calm the dumb dog down. For some reason, freaking out on him didn't do the trick. It took about an hour for all of us to go back to sleep. dumb dog.

You're right. I'm cranky because I didn't get enough sleep. I'll apologize to the dog tonight!

I have a 12 year old beagle mix, Clara. When it's not 95 degrees out, I normally have my door wall open at least a few feet - even if the verticals are closed, the door's still open. I think Clara got quite used to being able to walk in and out whenever she wanted to.
I was watching TV, looked over just as she plowed head first into the closed door. I don't think I've ever laughed soooo hard!! I', pretty sure she knew I was laughing...she had the most embarrased doggie expression on her I've ever seen!!

I have two pugs, a male and a female. Our front yard (the "pug yard") is fenced, and it is their little kingdom. In their opinion, no one had better dare walk or bike down the street by their yard. If someone does, they start barking. The funny thing is, as soon as the male barks, the female starts attacking him! Apparently, it is okay for her to guard the pug kingdom, but he's not supposed to! He is such a wienie, he just lets her bully him every single time.

What's a "door wall?" Is it what we in the midwest call a "sliding glass door?"

My dog does so many cute, adorable, funny stuff I won't bore you--suffice to say we are unable to watch dog shows on TV--she really is irate about those other dogs in her house.
One of my co-workers was telling me yesterday that a doe (deer) has chosen to bed her fawn down just on the outside of their backyard fence. When his dog Tucker found them, the doe was very protective, of course. Now the doe appears to have accepted that Tucker is not too much of a threat but Tucker goes out and the doe and dog run up and down the fence, on either sides, racing each other!

I am at home right now (on vacation), and my 40 pound Australian Cattle Dog mix is laying paws up on my lap, snoring, as I am on the computer. Her one paw is actually tucked up under my ear to hold her steady (she's way too big for a lapdog, but she certainly doesn't seem to care).

My dog will use her nose to fling open the sliding screen door when she's ready to come inside. I don't know how she figured out how to do it but it so funny to watch her. I just wish she'd learn to close it behind her!

Several years ago I got a call at work from the Police dept. and they said there was a 911 call that came in from our house which I thought was strange since no one would be home that time a day. They said all they could hear was a dog barking in the background. They dispatched a patrolman and he said looking through the window our house was trashed. I left work and went home to meet the patrolman. When I got there nothing was missing and the only thing that was trashed was a box that had those white Styrofoam packing pieces in it. Our Boston, about 2 or 3 months old at the time, had gotten out of the utility room and was having a high old time with the box and its contents and anythign else it could find laying around. The phone was laying on the floor. The only thing we could figure was the phone rang and the dog "attacked" it and while playing with it with his paws managed to dial 911.
