Wherever the plane lands
Tomorrow (Saturday) the Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to launch at 3:49 p.m EDT. If anyone is interested in seeing it, but won't be near a TV you can watch it live here.

There has been a downgrade to only a 60% chance of favorible weather for the launch tomorrow. Cloud ceiling must be no lower than 5,000 feet, and there can be no lightning or rain within 23 miles of the landing strip.

Of course, you know what Florida weather is like right now.

I tried to get tickets for the launch the day they went one sale...Amazingly, sold out in like 30 seconds. So I'm staying home and painting my bedroom - or going to Toronto to see if the Phils can get back on track!

Sorry SS, I am not allowed to take anyone with me. It took USA (United Space Alliance) the company that I actually work for, 6 months to do background checks, and drug tests on me before I could get in there.

For some reason the "I know this person, so it's ok to let them in" just doesn't work down at NASA.

I don't think that's gonna work either

One night they locked the place down and brought in the bomb squad because someone left their lunch box sitting on the floor.

You should see what happens when an employee there wanders into an area that he/she does not have security clearance for.

I watched John Glen's shuttle launch from the deck of a cruise ship (while we were waiting for it to sale). I have never seen anything so loud or so fast, it is an experience of a life time.

How long will they have to wait if the weather isn't clear to try again?

My father lives in Florida outside of Orlando and the first time we visited he got passes to go where they stash the public to watch a launch. It's in a field across from the shuttle after you cross on to the Kennedy Space site--not where the control area is. They postponed it because of wind 3 times that day and finally scrubbed the mission for the day. But it was exciting just looking across at the shuttle on the platform and watching the ground operations was exciting. Want to try to visit next time when they actually launch. Don't know who my Dad knew to get us in but we had fun. Bimmer, you probably know all about that stuff. Pretty awesome even from a distance.

Now they are calling for only a 40% chance of favorible weather.

If they cannot launch tomorrow, they will try again Sunday. If it's doesn't go Sunday, they will try Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, they will need to drain the Hydrogen fuel cells and refill them before they can try again next Saturday.

I thought I heard that Saturday they would only have a 10 minute launch window? I could be wrong.

I am so scared about this launch. They have not corrected the problem that caused the last crash. They are basically saying it is not likely to happen again. I can't believe they would take a chance with lives at risk, not to mention the millions of dollars involved! I mean, if you can't fix the problem, then redesign the darn thing.

Well, now we are back to a 60% chance of favorible weather for the launch. The bird is already filled with 528,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel. That link above is now up and showing the Shuttle.

Launch is expected at 3:48:41 and the launch window is open for 10 minutes today.

Everybody enjoy! I am off to work now!

Have a wonderful weekend!
