I made CDs for my brother's 40th--the CDs had 40 songs in total on them. There was one song from each year of his life in chronological order. I tried to pick songs we listened to as kids for the really old ones.

The high school years were the hardest to choose because we listened to so much music. You could make 60 years of music CDs. Unless he still listens to new music, for the 80s, 90s, and 00s, you may have to pick songs by artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s who are still recording. A lot of them still are--Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, etc.... It would be great to play at the party.

Get 60 pictures from over the years - as far back as you can get your hands on - and number them/place in frames, hang on clothesline, on a fence, display somehow/create a timeline so folks can see them. Have those disposable camera's around to take more pics. I have to agree - Oriental Trading is a great place to go for decorations. There is also cool stuff on LDT Commodities sometimes.

You could place the pineapple rings to show 60.

Another good luau cake is Hawaiian wedding cake. Some recipes call it mandarin orange cake. Easy and chilled.

My mom is turning 50 and we're planning a surprise party for her too.

MOM? 50? Oh no, I turn 50 next week, and I can't imagine being anybody's MOM!

For one of Dad's birthdays, we got a white tee shirt and colored liquid plastic for writing that stays on cloth and doesn't wash out. We covered the shirt with Dad's favorite sayings, many of which were totally unique to him.

Technically, you could be someone's Grandma at 50.

OMG! Mandarin Orange Cake IS very delish!
I had no idea it was Hawaiian Wedding Cake!?!?!?
I recently saw at a store where they had taken "noodles" (those round colored things that you play with in the swimming pool) and had made a palm tree out of it. It was soooo cute. I don't suppose anyone knows how to do that and would be willing to share..... (I ask with fingers crossed...)
