I just noticed at the FFIEC site you can now choose from 2003 or 2002 with a radio button, for the census data you want. Kewl

Unfortunately no census demographics yet I wanted to know if I lived in a rich or poor area...can't tell unless I check my checking account balance.

As I understand it 2000 Census demographics won't be up until April or May.

To determine your areas income level, look around. If most of your neighbors are wearing old duct tape, it is LMI, if they are wearing new duct tape, it is upper.

I think the figures would be thrown off by the timing of the annual ball Andy. Everyone who is anyone buys their carharts and duct tape gowns this week. I'll check in a month...see how much cat hair is stuck to my neighbors coat

Actually, the data is available, The census bureau did not come out with it in time for FFIEC to get in to the CRA or HMDA software or up on their website.

So, Don, does that mean we should anticipate that FFIEC site to be updated in the next few months, or not regarding that additional click through data?

No Dawnie. Andy has the right idea its the Duck Tape Income Classification.

Andy- yes they should have the demographic data up at the same time they put up the census tract income classifications. I've heard various dates but its supposed to happen sometime in the second quarter.

Another thing to be aware of its going to be nye on to impossible to make some demographic comparisons to 1990 data. This is the result of several things. Differences in how race and ethnicity information was collected is part of that. In some demographic tables there are as many as 63 possible combinations of race. A person who indicated White in 1990 could now be counted in one of the other Race categories. I.E 1990 White In 2000 that same person could be counted in a 2 race category "White and Asian" instead of "White Alone"

Metropolitan areas probably have the biggest changes in tract boundaries and splits. Matching up 1990 tract areas to 2000 tract areas for many will be a task of futility.

I'm sure the FFIEC has its hands full trying to figure all this out for CRA purposes.

I plan to cover some of this in an on line workshop in March

I expect that my 40th birthday gift (in May) will be the Census data telling me that I have no low-income areas in my choosen assessment area also and that all but one of the mod-income areas are also being classified to high-income. Specific income data will show that all of my clients loans are to oil barrons.

(ahhh the nightmares!)
