Ok, if MB is the guy to ask for car advice...

When I was younger all I could afford was crap, then came the kids and the minivans, then the last two have been decent inexpensive cars I can pass on to my daughters. So...sometime next year I am FINALLY planning on buying a car JUST FOR ME. My criteria:

Performance -- has to be fairly powerful, but I don't need 400 hp, should handle great though.

Style -- should turn some heads, don't need something exotic, but I also don't want something I can't find in the parking lot.

Comfort -- don't want a living room on wheels like traditional american luxury cars, but don't want my knees up to my chest just for the sake of speed. I am a gadget-freak, so I definitely don't want something barebones.

Price -- would prefer to stay under $35,000 -- would be open to new or used.

Ok MB, what should I buy??

I have a few suggestions that I have started to really like.

1) The BMW 325i I think you can get for under 35.
2.) The Lexus IS300 (I think it is)
3.) The Acura TSX (nice style, but only 205 hp - handles great)
4.) Acura TL, more HP but not exactly pure performance, more all around.
5.) Audi A4 or A6
6.) Volvo , a little ugly but still a pretty good car.

If you want performance for all around driving I would go with BMW. But those can get pricy. I am with MB though, go for the M3 if you can afford it.

Coupe or Sedan?

Large, medium, or small overall size?

New: 2006 Infiniti G35 coupe (the coupe has GREAT resale value), Nissan Maxima SE (a bargain), MB C230 sport sedan (new and improved with more power), Lexus ES250 (can't get an ES350 for 35k but these are new and improved as well).

I would go out and test drive everything as there are so many choices out there now.

Used: The world is your oyster. My friend just bought a 2002 Porsche 911 cabriolet for around $39k and that car is just beautiful.

Keep me posted!

Agree with Anon also, almost forget the venerable 3 series. They have ratcheted up in price over the last few years, but there are definite reasons why it has been awarded pretty much every car of the year award for many years.

Thanks for the suggestions -- have heard good things about the G35. Coupe or sedan doesn't really matter. Prefer a small to medium overall size, but want something that isn't too cramped in the front seat (back seat doesn't matter). Planning on kicking off my search with the Chicago Auto Show in Feb.

Infiniti G35 Coupe!!!! Just bought mine in April and I LOVE IT ( and previously, I've always been a loyal Toyota owner)!!!

Every time I get into that car, I just love it! Definitely the car for me! Gotta watch my speed, though. This toy tempts me too much!

LOL...good taste...yes indeedy!

Well, it's a 2006, automatic (yeah...I'm a wuss). Color is...well...Serengetti Sand (sort of a champagne color). Loaded with options (gotta luv the "bells and whistles").

I think most of all...I love the way it sounds when you start the engine (or accelerate...and boy does it accelerate!). Mmmmm....music to my ears.

Let me know when ya' wanna ride, MB.

SH, I saw those too and thought they were nice. They are just a tad out of my range, but maybe I can manage it.

::in a really whiny voice::

you guuuuuyyyyysssss! it isn't an M3 after all!!!

i have more clues...please don't let me down!

-- it ISN'T an M3
-- it is a BMW
-- it is a 2 seater convertible
-- it has the same 240 hp engine as a pre-2000 M3
-- the base model has a 3 in the name, but the sport version DOES NOT

if i can get the car right, i get the date

(nto to worry though...i had two dates with two guys this weekend )

96 - 2000

Manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA, the M Roadster is a Z3 with a high-performance suspension, larger wheels, bigger exhaust, and the inline six-cylinder engine from the BMW M3.

The BMW Z3 M Roadster was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1996. Equipped with the technology of the M3, the Z M Series has agility, safety, compactness and awesome power in the stylish Z package.

The 2001 BMW M coupe and M roadster made their world debut at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.

These two cars had previously won praise for their combination of unique style and lightening quick responsiveness. Of particular note was their 240 horsepower, in-line six cylinder engine, courtesy of BMW M.

Starting in 2001 that engine gave way to an all-new 3.2 liter in-line six, first seen in the M3 coupe. In the M roadster, horsepower went from 240 to an even more thrilling 315. There's also a significant increase in torque, from 236 lb-ft. to a new peak of 251 lb.ft. The European M cars have the 321hp double VANOS engine.

Dip, didn't you say the car was only 2 years old? If so, that wouldn't be a Z3, but a Z4
