I think the Italians stole alot of our Polish dishes. We take pasta, fill it with mashed potatoes, or cheese, or sauerkraut,or fruit and fry them in butter. Pierogies. The Italians take pasta, fill it with cheese or meat, throw red sauce on them. Ravioli.

The Polish take potatoe dumplings, fry them in butter and call them halushkis. (Not sure of the spelling.) The Italians take potatoe dumplings, throw red sauce on them, and call them gnocchi.

Anything we Poles butter, the Italians drown in red sauce!

Both are yummy; tho I am kind of partial to butter!

Oh yeah; pierogies look like half moons, ravioli are little squares.

The pierogies here in Ohio are usually square like ravioli.

My grandmother used to make potatoe pierogis. After she died, I worked at a Polish delicatessen in Chicago and bought them there. They had sauerkraut filled, cheese filled, and fruit filled (dessert pierogies). After I got married, I used to make them myself, potatoe or cheese filled, but now I found them in my grocer's freezer, at Woodman's. Mrs. T's Pierogies. They have a potatoe and cheese mix which is almost as good as mine. I haven't tried their just plain cheese filled yet.

I still make my own ravioli, cause I can't find any frozen ones which taste as good.

Years ago I lived in a polish city of suburban Detroit called Hamtramck. The catholic church I went to had pierogies made by little old ladies during lent. My sil was Polish and told me how to cook them. They were great. Years later I bought some at a different church fair for my son and he now loves them. My German husband thinks we are nuts, but hey, the only thing German he likes is beer. I love to tease him that it's a fine line between German/Polish food and music.

We forgot to mention the urban legend about giant alligators living in the sewers of New York City! Naturally, they grew up from the tiny souvenir pet alligators folks bought in Florida on vacation and then flushed down the toilet when they started growing too big...

Nanwa, I didn't know you were Polish too! Bengal Fan and I have been having the 'which peirogi are best' discussion for over a year.

It's almost time for my mom to make her version of dessert peirogi... plum dumplings with the sweetened sour cream sauce. omg! I remember when we couldn't eat meat on Fridays and we used to make a whole meal out of plum dumplings! Or cherry ones.
