I can't believe I haven't seen a Tigers thread! Come on Michaganders!! What's up with that! I think they are going to go all the way - thanks to Leland (sp?). They haven't had a coach in a long time that has seemed so in tune with what the team needed! Yaaay Detroit!!

All I know is the last time the Tigers won the World Series, Detroit became one big BBQ. Will be interesting to see what transpires if they win the big one this year.

It's not a big deal to me, but everyone knows that wasn't dirt, especially when you look at photos of the same "dirt" spot on his hand in the American League playoff games he won. No ballplayers want to call him on it, because other pitchers use "dirt" too. Most of the time they use shaving cream or suntan lotion, except when it's too cold, then they use pine tar.

Let's not overemphasize pine tar, or whatever it was. The fact remains - one scoreless inning with 'something' on the pitching hand; seven scoreless innings without.

in which he was photographed with the same "dirt" (cough, BS, cough) on his hand.

This has been rehashed on the news all day today. Even the Cards manager doesn't think that he used pine tar. But in any case since the hitters are allowed to use pine tar at bat and in the National league the pitchers must hit (no designated hitters allowed), what's going to happen tonight after the pitchers use a bat with pine tar? Are they supposed to go wash their hands? This stuff only comes off with turpintine! Get over it. Kenny Rogers didn't use this stuff or the umps would have noticed. You are all saying that the umps let it go? They have no allegiance to Detroit. And for the record, I was at the 84 Tiger win and there was absolutely no riot. The last time we had a riot in Detroit was 1967, caused by a blind pig bar. Maybe a little over exuberanse in 68 but I was downtown in 84 and all was fine. The media likes to portray Detroit as a crime ridden, black ignorant and poor city when in fact we have some of the greatest talent musically and sports wise in this city. Along with some very great medical people, both black and white. Remember nothing happened with the Red Wings wins, the Pistons wins, the Shock wins and the recent America League win. Focus on the positive. Go Tigers, you are the best!!!!!! They have really come back.

I might have missed it, but I don't think Tony La Russa has ever said he thinks Rogers didn't have pine tar on his hand. He has said in public, however, that he didn't think it was dirt. He said this during an interview from his office that was broadcast on the public address system at Busch Stadium. The Tigers were in the house and they heard it too.
Bottom line, I agree with the folks who say the game shouldn't be changed just because it's the World Series. In other words, if the incident was handled the same way as it would have been during the regular season, then it was the right way to handle it. All indications show that the situation wouldn't have been handled any differently during the regular season. So, let's forget it and let the teams play ball.

Actually, it is four - the magic number is the number of combined wins by your team and losses by your opponent needed to clinch. Teams start out the regular season with a magic number of 163, and would start the world series with a magic number of eight. Sorry to be a buzzkill.

Logical when there are 32 teams involved - not so much when there are only 2. Since every loss is offset by a win, and all the losses are generated by the same head-to-head opponent, doubling is irrelevant. The magic number is two.
(Unless you're rooting for the Tigers, like me!)

I think they mean the magic number is two for the cards to win the series. Two more wins and the series is theirs. So for all of us Cards fans the magic number is 2. LOL
