Yep, the appellate court upheld his conviction. This should be interesting...

He probably wishes he was tried in the US. He would be on death row for 30 years while he appealed.

Well, I'm all strict and stuff when it comes to usage, so I prefer to state that he will be hanged, not hung:

the article on CNN said he must die within 30 days...which actually means it could happen ANY time within the next 30 days. Here's to hoping that the hangman wants to get it done before the new year!

Instead of Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest on New Year's Rocking Eve...how about at the stroke of midnight here on the East Coast, they simulcast Saddam's execution? Think of how great that'll play to the Times Square crowd.

There was some further discussion this afternoon on NPR concerning the fact that he is in the middle of 2 other trials, and whether the hanging would proceed or wait until after the other trials are concluded. I didn't get to hear the remainder of the discussion (had to get back to work). I'm interested in knowing what the international legal beagles have to say about this.

Does it strike anyone else as surreal that in a country where people are routinely killed in the streets, this trial and execution are being carried out so formally?

When the court finishes with Sadaam, maybe we can send Bush and Cheney over -- might as well deal with all the war criminals connected with Iraq.

According to a previous story NPR did (when the original verdict was handed down), the execution would, er, interrupt the other 2 trials.

Okay...so...since everyone at my bank is on vacation this week...I came across a headline that made me scratch my head,

"Saddam Hussein's Baath party threatens to retaliate if their leader is executed"

My first response is this is typical rhetoric to drum up support for their cause.

My second response is, "Wait...the Baath Party....so you're telling me not only did we not finish the job in Afghanistan...but now the Baath Party is still calling shots in Iraq?"

Go figure...

Oh, Frank....

How I wish you were as interested in victory as you are in recriminations.

In Iraq, it means a government that respects the human rights of those it governs, opposes Islamist terror, and can sustain itself.

so what is your assessment of how we are doing in each of those 3 things? can you even call what they have a "government"?

You certainly can call it a government. It is not exerting much power in a portion of the country that holds a significant part of thei population (Baghdad and its environs). The original sin in Iraq was the failure to deal with al-Sadr and his Iranian-backed minions; we are going to continue to pay the interest on that until we allow the military to do what needs to be done in that regard.

I hope that the administration uses the recent detainment in Iraq of Iranian officials tied to attacks against coalition and Iraqi security forces as an opportunity to change the strategy as to how to deal with Iranian trouble-making. I am far from certain that they will do so.

Sorry, I didn't answer your question. I think that the situation in Iraq indicates that little progress has been made in the last year on any of the three.

-J-...I am interested in victory...I thought we had won...remember the Commander in Chief posing for the campaign photo on the aircraft carrier with "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" displayed proudly behind him....

But, if the Baath Party still has the power to strike US interests, what the hell have we accomplished?
