We have a nice sized collection of DVDs that one of my friends is frequently borrowing from. Recently, he's been borrowing videos then lending them out to others. This frustrates me, because we've asked that he consult us prior to lending out our movies. Unfortunately, this has been going on for as long as he's been borrowing our collection (about 4 years), so we don't know if there are any missing disks. However, this weekend I'll be inventorying our movies, so we'll know what we actually have. Any suggestions on how to deal with our friend, and nixing his third-party transactions?

The only thing I would recommend is an honest, straightforward talk. If that doesn't work, cut him off if you don't want this happening in the future.

If he can't handle your guidelines, then you should stop lending him movies. We've had a few situations like this in the past, and you just have to be completely honest and put your foot down. You've worked hard to aquire your movie collection and you should protect it.

Amen to everything said so far.
Make a database of your movies and make it to where you can check them in and out. Give him a talk and if he doesn't respect your wishes, cut him off.

Seems pretty nervy to me. I can't imagine borrowing something from a friend and then lending it to someone else. With or without the owner's permission. This person has exhibited a total disregard for your wishes so why continue to allow the abuse of you property? What I can't figure out is why you let this go on for so long. Maybe after you finish your inventory, you could make up a sign-out sheet and keep track that way. Let the mooch know there is a time limit and that if he doesn't return on time, he can replace the item. Either that or direct him to Blockbusters or Netflix and let them deal with the mess.

Cut him off altogether....they are yours to lend, not his.

I used to loan books, movies, and such to my sister. she loaned them out to her friends who loaned them out to their friends. I never got my stuff back! I don't loan my sister anything anymore.

Part of me knew that laying down strict ground rules would be the only option to control this situation. It's just really gotten out of hand lately, thus prompting this thread.
Thank you for helping me with this issue!

Learned my lesson along time ago. I simply do not allow any movies that "I" have paid for to leave my house. They dont come back.
Give him mapping directions to the nearest movie rental store.

Give him mapping directions to the nearest movie rental store. Better yet, set up a rental fee, and get a deposit for his membership card I understand your frustration-I loaned a DVD to someone who at the time was a coworker-never got it back. It sucks. If your friend can't respect your generosity of loaning the dvd's, the party is over.

I'll spend this extended weekend creating membership cards and contracts. Darn, and I thought I'd spend a day at the rodeo!

don't forget to add the $50 movie replacement fee in conjuntion with the overdue fee, post maturity rate, lost rental to others fee and the overall annoyance fee to the contract.
If you have to miss the rodeo you might as well make it worthwhile!

Ask Bob Barker to pay him a visit.
I guarantee he won’t do it again.

I have OCD about my DVD's as well as my books. No one gets to borrow anything even my closest family members and friends. They know that if they do borrow something and if the pages are bent or the disk is scratched they will be buying a new one. I also inventory all my books and DVD's because you never know when a theif wants something of yours. It is mostly for insurance purposes :o) I am odd. . . I know.

You sound like my oldest son, who eveytime he went to best buy had to buy a CD or DVD, he has some that have never been opened. He had problems with people coming by and borrowing his, so I bought a box with a lock, and no more problem...

Well, I guess I just wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he might grow out of this behavior. Perhaps I've tolerated it so long, it's become acceptable?
