Ok, maybe I am an idiot and just don't get it. Why are they making another dollar coin? The sacagewa (sp?) coin didn't go anywhere, the Susan B anthony didn't go anywhere and yet, here they go again???

I don't like them because they are two heavy and the SB was like a quarter. I hate change!

DQ, please tell us how you feel!LOL...

As a collector, I look forward to the new coins, and I am sure the mint is counting on them to be popular with collectors, given the fact the President to be depicted will change frequently. The state quarter program was a huge success for the mint.

I agree I don't like all that heavy change either. I guess the people at the mint are just bored!

Because the law says they have to do it for all of the dead presidents.

I understand how coin collectors would enjoy this, Sox. I can't consider myself a full blown collector but I have a few odd ball ones that I've come across. I was just wondering if it's the governments way of trying to get rid of the paper $1 again or if it is just strickly from the collection point of view? Also I saw in the article where 71% of people don't want to get rid of the penny, even though it costs more to produce it than it is worth. I would vote to get rid of it but wonder what some other peoples opinions are?

Yes. I found it on the US Mint Website. It is a result of the Presidential Coin Act of 2005. I was curious also. But it is fun to collect them. The only new coins I will miss not collecting will be the gold coins to commemorate the First Ladies.

So it is only coins, not bills, AG?

It may be both, BankerJen, but this time (IMHO) by changing the Presidents, if it fails to catch on in general use, there would probably be enough interest by collectors to make the program worthwhile and a success...

As for pennies, just get rid of them....they are a nightmare, and it may make my trip into the convenience stores a bit quicker...LOL

Yes just coins. Looking at the press release for the first coin makes me wish I were in NYC to see the hooplah that will surround the release of the new coin GW.

Many in government have argued that the Treasury could save money by eliminating the dollar bill and going to coins. Coins can stay in circulation for up to 30 years. The average time a dollar bill stays in circulation is 18 months. The only way Americans will accept the dollar coin is by force, however, and that means eliminating the dollar bill. While many would be annoyed by the adjustment, the idea makes sense, IMO.

I think a part of this was due to a recent lawsuit by someone, I believe it was the ACLU, saying that because we don't use more coins we are discriminating against the blind.

Most other countries have different sized paper money. I believe the (sorry I don't know the Society for the Blind's actual name) has been trying to get the country to convert to the different sizes. That would be the most beneficial. Of course that probably won't happen.

you would think they would be, the smallest bill would then be $2 and most would probably just bring in $5 and their earnings would go up.
