This isn't going to happen and Bill is having too much fun being an ex-President. Gov. Spitzer would give the seat to someone that helped him in the recent election and someone who he could count on.

I don't think that Clinton would be interested at this point. He can get more accomplished with his Foundation and with the Clinton Global Initiative then he could as one of 100 Senators.

Plus, Clinton decides his own schedule as a private citizen; as senator, it might be much more hectic, which is an issue when you have heart problems.

Plus, I have this gut feeling that he does not mind the time away from the Mrs. Easier to misbehave when you are in separate cities.

A former President being elected to another national office after serving is not unprecedented. If I recall correctly, John Adams was elected to the House of Representatives after he served as President. (I think he was worried that Thomas Jefferson would ruin the country after Jefferson "stole" the election.)

You are thinking of Adams' son, John Quincy. He had a long career in the house after serving as President.

Adams pere retired to his farm in Braintree after his term as President ended.

President Andrew Johnson became Senator Andrew Johnson once his term as President expired.

I do think, that President Clinton would not be suited as 1 of 100 in the Senator.

If he were going to run for anything, I think Mayor of NYC would be the better choice...

Tell me if I am wrong, but my understanding is that he actually could run for President again if he wanted to?

No he could not...
It is 2 terms as President...period...
The biggest misconception is that he could not run for more then 2 consecutive terms...a President can only be elected to 2 four year terms.
A President could serve for 10 years if he takes over for a President who has served less then 1/2 of a term. This is why Johnson was eligible to run again in 1968.

Thanks Frank - well, I guess he could always join his wife's ticket, become VP, and then get her impeached!

NP: Actually, it's not as cut-and-dried as that. The 22nd Amendment does not say that someone who has served two terms is ineligible to be president, it says "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice".

Some people interpret this as meaning that someone who has been elected twice could still become president by succession from the VP spot rather than being elected. Others believe as you do that if you cannot be elected as president that you can't even run as VP.

It's not going to happen, anyway, so I doubt that the issue will ever be resolved.

Non Ron, the 12th Ammendment states "no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."

Since Bill is ineligible to be President...he cannot service as VPOTUS.

But...he might be able to be Secretary of State...

Yes, I understand your argument. The counter argument is that he is not "ineligible to be president" just ineligible to be elected as president.

I get your argument. But like you said, unless he become Secretary of State and the POTUS, VPOTUS, Speaker, and President Pro Temp of the Senate all die...we'll never get a resolution.

No, that isn't the argument. The argument is that because he is not "ineligible to be president" he could be elected as VP.

You consider being ineligible to be elected president as being the same thing as being ineligible to be president. Others say that he is only ineligible to be elected, but he is still eligible to be president by other means. If he is still eligible to be president at all, then he would arguably still be eligible to run as VP.

Mmm...french horseburger...

I think that the election to the office of VP someone ineligible to be elected President would violate the original intent of the 22nd amendment - otherwise, you could have politically popular candidates running for a third term on the ticket as VP with the understanding that the Presidential candidate would resign.

LOL

At risk of further beating the poor horse, I'll try to elucidate.

The difference of opinion on this topic lies in the difference between eligible to be ELECTED President and eligible to SERVE AS President. There is a difference. Clinton has been elected twice and served 8 years. So, he is INELIGIBLE to be elected again, i.e. a 3rd time. However, Clinton is technically eligible to SERVE 2 more years, though NOT by being elected to the office of POTUS. Thus, some people interpret this to mean that he is ELIGIBLE to be ELECTED Vice President, because he is still eligible to SERVE as President. I'm not sure I agree, but I understand the argument.

Clear as mud?
