After some internet research we found out that both are acceptable; however "an" comes across to most to be a bit stuffy or pretentious.
Well, heavens to betsy, let's not be stuffy or pretentious!!

I thought you use the word "an" if the next word starts with a vowel? Usually the rule, but not always. I think is has to do with the "sound" of the first letter: "I'll be there in an hour."

I didn't read every page so this may have already been written: I hate people that say "it happened ON accident" it should be BY accident.

There are also words I try not to use, not because the usage is incorrect but because the words are hum drum and seem to steal the impact of what I am saying or writing. "Really" It was really cold. It would be better to say "it was icy cold" or "it was bitterly cold." It was really big. It would be better to say "it was huge (or enormous or immense)." "Pretty" It was pretty amazing. Was it amazing or not....just partly amazing? Was it surprising, unusual or perhaps unexpected? "Nice" She was a nice person. Well, how? Was she was compassionate, attentive, helpful? "Sort of, Kind of" Used correctly..."I won't stand for that kind of treatment" and "She adores that sort of chocolate." But making statements like "I felt sort of confused" or "I was kind of angry" leaves the listener wondering what the statement was intended to convey. "Just" The word "just" should only be used to imply a sense of "simply", "only" or "exactly." But many people use it to diminish importance. Good usage: "I just wanted to get home on time." "Their support is just what I needed." "The arrow just missed its mark." Bad usage: "I just feel like I've been used." "I just think that you should be nicer." "I just want to say that I think you're wrong." Bad usage serves to weaken simple assertions, or to apologize in advance for speaking at all or possibly sends a message that the speaker somehow needs to justify what he or she is saying. Well, gee.....gotta get to work now 'fore I git in trouble.

Yes, I hate it when people make up new acronyms and then use those acronyms as though everyone in the world will know what they mean! In fact, I hate acronyms in general!!! Ok....NOW, I'll get to work.

Also, those who only use part of a sugar packet and leave it for someone else to use.... DITTO!! In our break room, people leave their cups, empty sugar packets, hot chocolate packets, etc, etc for the "maid" to clean up. Except that we don't have a maid. In fact, there is a sign posted in a prominent place that says, "Clean up after yourself." Slobs!....who needs 'em?!!!! These are the same people who leave the table and walk away leaving chairs pushed back for people to run into, fall over, hook a toe on, etc.

Personal Identification Number Number Vehicle Identification Number Number Here at my bank, if you open a new account, you receive a FREE gift!! Hmmmm....I'm trying to think of a gift that wouldn't, by nature or definition, be free. I guess we give those as opposed to those gifts that you have to pay for.

So, when I write a check, shouldn't the clerk be asking for DIN number?

My biggest pet peeve? That this joke isn’t posted often enough.
A man came home, screeching his car into the driveway, and ran into the house. He slammed the door and shouted at the top of his lungs,
"Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!"
The wife said,"Oh my God! What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?"
"Doesn't matter," he said. "Just get the hell out."
Oh, and vegetables, definitely vegetables, they really tick me off.

not pronouncing spanish words correctly...for instance...go to a mexican rest. and order a chicken quesadilla (pronounced K-sah-D-ya) NOT K-sah-dilla That's true, but there is a city north of here (in Texas), named Amarillo (yellow in Spanish). And residents pronounce it a-ma-ril-o....rather than a-ma-ree-yo. My Mom has a cabin in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Most people here pronounce it ree-a-do-sa.....can't figure out how they're coming up with that (I think Ruidoso translates to "noisy" in Spanish).

Additionally:: my PIN number. What do you think the "N" represents, anyway?!? All I know is that you are supposed to use it at the "ATM Machine". Don't I know that! Sadly, when you say it correctly (i.e., omit "number" and "machine") people look at me and say, "You mean [add the omitted word back on]?"
