You won't be disappointed. It reminds me of a Gladiator meets We were Soldiers meets Troy movie... The visual effects are pretty amazing.

It looked like interesting cinemtography, from the commercials, but way too violent for my taste. However, those guys with the ripped abs were something! I heard the actor who plays the leader of the 300 worked out 2 hours a day with his trainer, 2 hours a day with the movie's trainer, and another 2 hours a day with the stuntmen. All that work, and if he sloughs off for a couple of weeks, it will all be gone.

Nick Cage looked really buff too in his devil motorcycle movie.

I saw some previews of it. It looks scary to me. I will probably wait til it comes out DVD style and watch it at home. I heard it was super good.

In your opinion, how historically accurate would you say the movie is?

It's not particularly accurate, but it probably scores about average compared against similar 'block-busters about historical events' movies.

For accuracy, I'd read Stephen Pressfield's "Gates of Fire".

Sorry, I got my answer from a search about the movie. I can sum everything up as...not very historically accurate. I of course didn't think it would be, because obviously the entire boring truth is not "cool" enough for Hollywood. I started to notice the possible discrepancies in one of the trailers when they talked about the 300 vs 1 million. There were not 1 million persians at the battle, it was about 250,000 but I guess 1 million sounds better than a quarter of a million. I noticed they also changed the Spartan's version of the phalanx because I guess it didn't look "cool" enough. Although that fighting formation became the standard the whole way up through the Roman Empire who improved upon it and pretty much conquered most of the known world with their legions.

My point is why can't they just tell the correct story? The original story is amazing enough without embellishments. Did you know the Persians lost approximately 30,000 troops in that battle? That equates to a 10 to 1 ratio. The battle of the Alamo is regarded as America's Thermopylae.

My favorite quote from the battle: Leonidas is told the Persian archers will fill the skies with their arrows so they will blot out the sun. His response,"then my soldiers will fight in the shade." Unbelievable courage.

I liked that quote as well

I made a mistake, The quote is not attributable to Leonidas. It came from a Spartan soldier by the name of Dianekes(sp?). The quote attributable to Leonidas is, when asked by the Persians to have him and his soldiers surrender their arms. His response in Greek translated to "Come and take them."

Well it was based off a graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller, the same guy who did the book Sin City, which turned out to be an awesome movie as well. So historic accuracy may not be the first thing they were worried about.

I just completely forgot that it came out this last weekend, or else I would have seen it.

i went to see it on imax on saturday...got there at noon and the entire day was already sold out (totally defeated the purpose of driving over an hour to the imax theater). we saw it on the regular big screen instead. it was entertaining and the effects were great, but it was fairly grusome and a little slow moving between the battle scenes.

all in all, glad i saw it on big screen, but not likely to ever watch it again :-)

Just to clarify the math, isn't 30,000 dead Persians vs. 300 Greeks a ratio of 100 to 1?

Those guys and the Pan Greek navy saved western civilization. Once the Persian navy was destroyed, it was only a matter of time before the Greeks pulled together and drove the Persians back.

I Hope to see it at Imax. But, watched a special on the battle on the History channel, just to whet my appetite.

I knew there was a reason why they give me a calculator at work. Thanks for the help.

Way, way south.
I read an article over the weekend that stated that it was actually about 250,000 vs. 7,000 until pretty much all of the 7,000 bailed and only 300 Spartans were left.

And, pretty much all of the film except the galloping horses was shot in a warehouse and was computer generated.

Those additional 7,000 were Thespian support staff, and the historian Herodotus reported that at least 700 volunteered to stay and continue the battle, at the cost of their lives. Their burial mound can still be visited. These guys knew it was a lost cause, the last thing Leonides said to his wife was "marry again and have many children" - these guys were true supermen.

I had read a review of the movie that said it felt more like a video game than a movie at times. I think I would agree. There was lots of blood flying around but it was more interesting than gross. There were slow motion effects, etc. that really created some interesting scenes.

And, yes, all those ripped abs were pretty amazing! Wow! Ladies, if you can get past the violence it's worth it!

I saw it last night with my husband. We both loved it. Loved the action scenes
The movie was sold out again. Luckily I bought the tickets at lunch. There is nothing like watching a movie with a theatre full of soldiers on payday There were even people standing throughout the movie because there weren't any visible seats.
