Been reading in some of the other threads about states having their own compliance association. I know the GBA has a compliance section, but wondered if anyone knew if there is or ever was a compliance assocation. We are interested in participating or discussing creating one if there is interest. Thank you.

I have never heard of a GA compliance officer's association but would be delighted to participate if there was one. Currently I participate in the Florida Compliance Officer's Association. They meet in Tallahassee periodically.

I was part of a compliance officer's association in Tampa, Florida about 5 years ago but haven't seen anything like it in Georgia. I too am interested.

I e-mailed Joe Brannen at the GBA concerning the interest in this thread for our own CO Association. He seemed interested and responsive to the idea. You may wish to do the same.

Came across this thread and wondered if anyone was aware if such a group has been established in Georgia? Thanks.

Not yet. There is an group in Atlanta, but the rest of us are on our own. Joe never got back with me on this and I guess we'll just have to do it ourselves.

Do you know who the contact is in Atlanta? Perhaps they would be willing to provide some guidance?

Afraid I don't remember his name - we were talking on the return flight from ABA NRCC one year.
Where in GA are you located?

I would be interested in joining in as well. Please keep this post updated if you hear anything or if you decide to start one on your own.

I'm located in Central West GA. Here's a name I got from someone in the Atlanta area but have not had a chance to call.

"For info on the Compliance Roundtable Group you can call Jim Graham at Georgian Bank. His phone number is 678-589-9000"

Georgian Bank is in north Atlanta, anyone know them?

I'd like to be included if one is formed. There is one in the Louisville, KY area where I used to work and it proved to be beneficial. Meetings were quarterly and rotated to various banks. Georgia is such a large state that 2 might be necessary. I can't see someone from the Valdosta area driving to Northern Atlanta for a meeting.

In Alabama we had them set up with the same regions as the Alabama Banker's Association. GBA has various regions also. We may wish to look at their structure and make our own regions for our associations. Perhaps annually we could have a combined meeting in Macon - that seems pretty central to everyone in the state.

Why don't you all send me your e-mail addresses (private message on this board)and I'll put together an organizational meeting for us in May or June somewhere in Macon? Contact all of the compliance officers in your area or provide me with their e-mail addresses so we can notify everyone. I would need to know about how many to expect in order to make reservations. As well as organizing, we could also have a guest speaker from either the state banking department or one of the regulatory agencies speaking on any topic you wish. Please include a topic you would like to learn more about with your e-mail and we'll get this ball rolling!

UPDATE: I've heard from several of you. I contacted the ICB for names of all CRCMs in GA and they gave me a contact in another state who had already been thru this formation process there. We had a long conversation and he provided many useful ideas. I also contacted Joe Brannen at the Georiga Bankers' Association to see if they would advertise the formation of this group in their newsletter so we could have greater coverage. Joe stated they had made the decision to support this at their last strategic planning session and want to partner with us to form this group. Looks like its finally going to get going - so keep your eyes open for any mention of this in the GBA newsletter and I'll continue to collect e-mail addresses for notification.

The Georgia Bankers Association has agreed to help us estabish this group. I just sent them the rostere of CRCMs in GA (29 names) along with the 12 of you who asked to be contacted about a meeting/group. If there are some who have not yet contacted me, now is the time to speak up. If you prefer you may contact Marybeth Jones directly at GBA to have your name added to the list - mjones@gabankers.com
Thanks!

Thanks, waldensouth.

It will be great to be a part of a compliance-related organization again.

Okay, folks, it's official! This was in the GBA newsletter today:

Compliance Peer Group in Organization
We are pleased to announce the formation of the Compliance Peer Group and are inviting compliance officers to attend an organizational meeting in Macon on July 25th. The Peer Group is being established in response to many requests GBA has received from bankers across Georgia. “The 21st century presents numerous challenges for those of us in the financial services industry – especially those with regulatory compliance responsibilities,” said Louvera Walden, Corporate Compliance for Ameris Bancorp., Moultrie, who has agreed to chair the organizational effort. “New laws and regulations are enacted, existing regulations are amended, and old regulations we thought we knew are being interpreted in a different way. The Georgia Bankers Association’s Compliance Peer Group is just what the busy compliance professional needs,” she said. Our intent is for the Compliance Peer Group to be a place to network with fellow compliance officers, receive training on issues that face all of us, and exchange ideas on what works and what doesn’t. The GBA Compliance Peer Group is being created for compliance professionals whether you wear your compliance hat full time or part time. We will be announcing more details about the meeting soon. Our goal is to facilitate compliance officers helping each other navigate the ever-changing tide of regulatory compliance. For more information, please contact GBA’s Marybeth Jones at (404) 420-2032.
