Just hoping to round up some prayers for my dog. She is having surgery Tuesday to repair a botched surgery she had last September.
Last summer, we finally decided to adopt a dog, and found a beautiful yellow lab pup through Labs4Rescue, a great rescue organization. 4 days after we got her, my father in law was playing with her, and she got tangled up in his legs and he fell on her. She severely broke/fractured her femur, and he broke his arm. She had emergency surgery (the vets staff surgeon was on vaca, so someone covered for him). It was a nasty fracture, but the surgery was successful. For the next 6 weeks, we had to make every effort to keep her quiet (yea-right-a 4 mo. old yellow lab)...we carried her in and out to do her business, lifted her in and out of her crate, and we even borrowed a portable crib so we could move her room to room to be with us. She recovered but she always favored that leg. Didn't seem to hurt her though.
A few weeks ago, she did something to aggravate that leg-she was literally dragging it behind her. We brought her to see the staff surgeon (we had never met him, and all the prior follow ups were with other vets) and he checked her out. He told us in no uncertain terms that the original surgeon screwed up in a couple of ways-he apparently used the wrong type of pins/wires, but more importantly, he did not properly align the two broken parts of the leg when he inserted the pins, so her leg is twisted and when she walks, the leg pops out of the hip joint. He has to go in, remove the pins (the break has healed nicely, although out of alignment) break/cut the leg and reset it. He will use a plate. He is confident this will allow her to walk normally with no issues and be a "normal" pup.
We were devestated to know she had to go through this again. The good news is the doc says she will be able to walk on it post surgery, although on a leash to limit her from running, jumping etc-after the last surgery they did not want her on it at all-so that should be easier on us...The other "good" thing is this doc was honest with us-he could have told us it was a complication of the first injury, and we would not have known any better. He had even made arrangements (before we met with him) with the owners of the hospital to not charge us for this-further showing how bad they screwed up the first time...
I know there are a lot of animal lovers out there, so any prayers for my Cassie are welcomed! Thanks for letting me share.
