I am cleaning out our vault. How long do we need to keep the requests from the Social Security Administration To Obtain Account Records From a Financial Institution? I have searched Title XI Right To Financial Privacy, and cannot find a record retention date.

Doesn't anyone ever get these? We have them back to 1977! The SSA does not have an e-mail address to contact, and the people I get on the phone haven't a clue that they even send these forms to banks.

I checked an original of the form for any retention requirements, but none are stated.

I don't know why you'd have to keep those past 7 years at the max. I know we keep a lot of stuff (we just shredded microfilm from the 1950's) but I think that 7 years is the longest that we have to keep anything. Of course, I know it is going to depend on your state laws, also.

Most of our state laws say to keep stuff 10, 15 or 20 years. But this is federal. Don't some IRS forms need to be kept beyond 7 years?

I guess there is no answer. I contacted the SSA; no one knew about the forms they send. I contacted my FDIC RO, who told me to contact the FDIC regs.gov, who told me to contact my FDIC RO.
