imo, tie bars have nothing to do with the casual-formal continuum. it has to do with the dork-cool continuum.

I agree - my point was that if you're not wearing a tie, you won't be wearing a tie bar.

BSAF, IMO a tie bar is along similar lines as a pocket protector (maybe not quite that bad, but it's moving in that direction).

rainman- I get the point. What about one that is sentimental? Say a grandfather's? What you think?

I wouldn't do a tie bar, but a chain would be ok. Also a tack, but those ruin today's silk ties. Also, be sure you (or someone you know) can tie a windsor knot!

Don't want any unfortunate accidents involving the fax or copier...

To keep my tie in place, I loop the inner part of the tie through the label on the back, then use a tie tack through the inner part and the label, and put the chain through my shirt button hole. The tie stays together and is not flying all over the place and I don't ruin the tie with holes.

My tie bar, Yes tie bar, keeps my tie out of the way and I have no problem with my tie the rest of the day.

My initial question was because I didn't want to be tugging on my tie during my interview. I wanted it to stay in place so I didn't have to constantly fidget with it (which would be a false sign of nervousness).

Further South than I wanna be.
Go for it Wes, start a new trend. All the dress styles of the 70s have come back for women, so why not the tie bar?
