We are in the middle of trying to housebreak our new puppy, she knows she is to do all her business outside but has not figured out how to tell us when she needs to go out (other than biting our toes, fingers etc until we figure out that is probably what she wants ) I was wondering if anyone has tried the "Doggie Door Bells" for training? Does it work? Are they worth the money? Any suggestions on how to go about training her using them?

I get this visual of the dog ringing the bell, then running away to hide while you answer it.

Yes-we put a bell on the back door-everytime she had to go out, we jingled the bell before we let her out...honestly didn't take that long before she was "ringing" it on her own. We were lucky in that she only had a couple of accidents in the house.

Just so they don't ring the bell and leave a brown paper sack on fire at the door!

LOL Nanwa!
I don't know, at least they'd be bagging it up then instead of me having to do it. I've decided I need a bigger pooper-scooper at my house so it doesn't take as long every morning.

Corky,
A dog trainer I know described this process with the bells:
Just before you take the dog out, put a dab of cream cheese (or peanut butter) on the bells. Be sure not to ring the bell yourself while doing this. The dog will lick off the good stuff, causing the bells to ring. Immediately send them outside, etc... After they understand that every time they ring the bell - and only when they ring the bell - they go outside to go potty, you can start skipping putting cream cheese on the bells once in a while. They should still touch them with their nose to ring them.
I couldn't find any reasonably priced bells at the time, so I bought a cheap wind chime instead.
Unfortunately, I was housetraining a 10 year old puppy mill rescue. Her housetraining is pretty reliable, but she never got the hang of the bells, so we just send her out on a regular schedule. Surprisingly, not too many people have asked why I have a wind chime mounted inside my back door at knee height!

I wish I could teach my cats to use the bell instead of clawing on the screen. I have to replace all my screens on the sliding doors because my guys tear them up.

Put a bell on the only door to the outside we have in the condo last night and she proceded to play with it for a few minutes. This sounds like it would work better. Wish me luck, we start tonight!!!!

We had our daughter's 9 month old dalmation for a few months and I was trying to figure out how to get him to tell us when he wanted out. He was already housebroken. I tied a big jingle bell to the front door and every time we were ready to go out, I said "go potty?" and rang the bell. Within about two times, he was ringing the bell by himself. Unfortunately, he rang it when HE wanted to go out to play too! He outsmarted us on that one.

You don't know Spunky. He'd find a way of getting them off, probably swallow them, costing big bucks at the vet. Or, he'd leave them on my side of the bed!

Corky, we bell trained our rat terrier when we got him in February. We didn't buy anything fancy, just used some "sleigh bells" leftover from Christmas decorations and hung them on a string from an end table next to the door. We didn't put and food on them or anything. We just picked up his paw and had him ring the bell when we thought he needed to go out. Soon he was doing it on his own.
The only problem we had/have is that he likes to ring the bell just to watch US come. At first, every time he'd ring, we'd chase him down and make sure he went out the door. After it became apparent that he was abusing the bells to initiate a game of chase, we would open the door every time he rang, but wouldn't chase him down to make him go out. He still gets a kick out of ringing just to get attention and probably only wants out about half the time he rings, but I still think it's a pretty good system.

The line about the dog ringing the bells to have you come is so funny and so true! These pets sure know how to work the system, don't they?! Funny though!

Ok, she is getting the idea She will go to the door, touch the bell with her nose and then lay down in front of the door. Mind you she does not actually hit the bell hard enough to ring it but she is getting the idea!! She also will refuse to come back inside if she is not done, which is a huge step also. She gets busy playing outside with leaves, sticks etc and it seems like she's all done so we head to the front door and she just sits down and gives that look of "What are you thinking"
