What a diverse group we are. Reminds me of a story.

What do you call someone who speaks two languages?

bi-lingual (scroll down)

And, what if they speak 3 languages? (scroll down)

Tri-lingual (or multi-lingual) (scroll down)

Well, then, what do you call someone who only speaks one language? (scroll down)

American (sad, but true).

I wish that this weren't true. As the majority of schools in the US offer foreign languages only to older students and only for a few years, many of the American children are at a disadvantage. Many of the schools in other countries "offer" (require) foreign language throughout the child's school years. For such an advanced country, in this aspect the US is extremely behind.

I agree, family members of mine lived in France during the first 5 years of both of their childs lives. The kids went to school where they were taught French, but required to speak English. They both learned so much at such a young age. They then moved back to the states, and since they were not required to speak French here, they have completely forgotten all they learned.

And to the Vulcan "Live Long and Prosper" the only suitable response was the Vulcan "Yes, ambassador!"

I was an army brat who spent several years as a young child in Germany and have been told that I spoke German fluently at the time. Well, as fluently as a toddler speaks anything, anyway. I had thought that all of that was forgotten, but I'm amazed that I do recognize some German words when I hear them. I guess you never totally forget something once you've learned it.

And rememer that it is also easier to relearn a language than to learn a totally new one.

It is easier for small children to learn new languages than for adults, not only because they are learning English (or another) at the same time but because the portion of the brain that allows for the correct pronunciation of many foreign sounds ceases in ability with age.

Our school district is cutting our elementary Spanish program, due to budgetary cuts. This is sad because my 2nd grader speaks Spanish almost as well as English. Don't you think it would be wiser to cut the foreign language in the higher grades, if any should be cut at all?

I'm probably the right person to answer this question and I will most likely get yelled at from verious sources for my response. That said, here goes.

I don't agree with taking foreign language programs out of schools at all. I am in favor of adding more of them. (Here's where I try to escape and evade) I would rather see the funding shifted from athletic programs or the like. Not to say that physical activity should be removed, but I have seen many a school system remove foreign language and arts programs to give more funding to athletics.

While some children grow up to obtain careers in professional sports, for most it is only something that is done in school. Foreign languages last a life time and can be of considerable value in the workplace. So when the school board votes to remove the little funding given to foreign language study in order to buy new supplies for a ball team (which in many cases are not yet actually needed) I am disgusted.

Hear, hear Kansayaku! Well said! But perhaps I am subjective since I prefer the
languages and arts to sports!

When I was a kid, my mother kiddingly called me "Grace".

Actually, I'm a sports lover but I agree wholeheartedly. Here, our Booster Club buys the uniforms, supplies, etc. We have outstanding music and art programs. That is why I hate to see the foreign language program suffer from cuts. A lot of people here would rather see the administrative office cut back. An idea that I tend to agree with.

I don't think you'll get too many virtual tomatoes thrown at you. I played high school sports, and, while I loved doing that, you can see how far my sports career went! I agree, our priorities are out of place in this country. We clearly place more value on playing and entertaining ourselves than we do on educating ourselves. Exhibit A- Look at how much pro athletes, actors, and musicians make versus teachers. Exhibit B- most kids know almost nothing about our country's history but they sure as can tell you about the latest movie or Britney Spears song. It's absolutely unbelievable to me.

I agree that there is too much emphasis placed on "athletics." But there is not ENOUGH emphasis placed on physical fitness. Aerobic activity (you know.....the kind that gets your heart rate up?) should be mandatory at least three days per week kindergarten through high school unless a doctor's excuse says otherwise. Unfortunately, most kids that are NOT in organized athletics are overweight (if predisposed to that condition) or otherwise unhealthy. You don't have to be overweight to suffer the consequences of a sedentary life style!!

Well, geez. I've gotten on the same soapbox on two different threads on the same day!! And this topic is in no way related to banking!!

But I feel better (for the week-end ) having gotten that off my chest.
