Here's a pretty cool video from a news helicopter that captured an 8 foot manta ray swimming of the coast of South Florida. At one point it comes within a few feet of a swimmer who never even saw it. (Mantas are harmless to swimmers.) Video

Bugs, mantas are not harmless to swimmers, I know someone who was wacked with a wing while swimming, broke his leg...

Happy are you on a mission to disagree with anything I say? Give it a rest, buddy.
I guess I should have said, "Mantas are generally harmless to swimmers, although injuries related to accidental collisions with the creatures, while quite rare, have been know to occur. There's also a chance that NASA will find life on Mars within our lifetimes."
Is that better, Doc?

Is a Manta Ray different than a Stingray? Which one killed Steve Irwin?

It says in the article that they don't bother humans... I'm sure the manta that broke your friends leg didn't mean to

It was a stingray spine that killed the Croc Hunter

Happy, I'm curious know know. Was your friend trying to swim with the manta to get a closer look or to play with it?

neither, was doing a training swim for a triathalon, there was a group of about 10 people, and it just came up, whacked his leg, and swam off. I'm sure it was the normal swimming motion, they didn't even know it was there until he got hit...

Maybe it was God intervening because something worse was going to happen if your friend swam...like maybe he was gonna drown and the manta saved him??? See...now it doesn't seem so bad....

Does he think the manta hit him on purpose, or does he think it was an accident accident, of course, the wing actually hit 3 people, he just got the brunt of it

Bugs- what's going on with AML and Happys' name in these threads? I don't know. Maybe I'm *not* going crazy, Patrice. Do you agree that yesterday these posts were under "happygilmore" *not* "AML-Barbarian?"

If you look closely it's AML-Barbrain, not Barbarian

AML, perhaps you should have grabbed the nearest weapon to that Manta ray. Maybe some glass shards or a pirate sword from a sunken ship. There may have even been a submerged, fully functional musket. You could have slain that beast with your ferocious skills.
