Driving in this morning, I popped in a CD I had not listened to in some time. Peter Framptom's Greatest Hits. Made me think of my many fav guitarists and hits.

The following Fella list purposely leaves out the majority of heavy metal bands, except very early pioneer bands, since you could list literally hundreds of awesome guitar work from metal, even from 1 or 2 bands. (I am sure Guitar Dude will chime in in a bit)

Not necessarily in the following order:

1. Voodoo Child - Jimi
2. Star Spangled Banner - Jimi
3. Eruption - Van Halen
4. Do You Feel Like I do (LIVE VERSION) - Peter Frampton
5. FreeBird (studio and/or live) - Lynnrd Skynnrd
6. Green Grass and High Tides for Ever - The Outlaws
7. Dazed and Confused (Live off of Song Remains the Same DVD) - Led Zep
8. The Warning - Black Sabbath
9. The James Bond Theme - Dick Dale
10. Sweet Child in Time - Deep Purple
12. Flying in a Blue Dream - Joe Satriani
13. Far Beyond the Sun - Yngwie Malmsteen and Rising Force

Because of the awesome guitar work, Bailey. May I suggest flower therapy?

If not flower therapy, then maybe reiki? I can see writing "Raining Blood" by Slayer or "Criminally Insane" by Slayer or "Overkill 1: The Nightmare Begins" by Overkill causes headaches, but Freebird? C'mon...

How about Zepplin's "No Quarter" from the live "Song Remains the Same?" I hate Zepplin, but this one song rocks.

Agree with Skynrd, they suck, and the song sucks.

Eric Johnson? Stanley Jordan?

Before it became the de rigeur anthem for football kickoffs, I used to love the opening coda of the Stones' "Start Me Up."

I think Stanley Jordan is a jazz guitarist, no?

What about Lindsey Buckingham on the live version of Fleetwood Mac's Big Love. He is an underrated guitarist. IMO.

I'll second that. He is very underrated and has a very unique style that I really like.

He is. And Mick Fleetwood is an underrated drummer. But what are you gonna do?

All good tags here.

And don't forget:

I Want You to Want Me - Cheap Trick
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles & Eric Clapton
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
John the Revelator - Phil Keaggy
Sleepwalk - Santo & Johnny (or Brian Setzer's cover)
25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago (Terry Kath)
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden (have you heard Chris Cornell's acoustic version?)
Starship Trooper - Yes
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
Roll Over Beethoven - ELO's cover
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits

I could go on a long time.

I didn't see this one until just now. I like Yngwie even less than I like Bruce Sprigsteen. Yngwie can play notes very fast, but he is certainly one of the most unmusical guitarists around. Playing fast does not make one a great guitarist, unless the young man listening has had too much beer, of course.

I quickly get tired of listening to Satriani, but I can only listen to Malmsteen for 30 seconds before I run screaming from the room! One of the worst days of my life was when my buddies wanted to get a pizza and sit through an entire G3 DVD featuring Malmsteen and Satriani. Oh, the humanity!! (I can't remember who the third guy was. I'm still in therapy to block the evening from my memory.)
