Any other brewers out there?

Yes, E Street, I too have fallen under the seductive spell of homebrewing. In fact, I'll be spending some time this weekend bottling my latest ale project. (called Reggae Red)

Other interests include things such as cooking, reading, kayaking, camping, travel, and the ever-popular home improvement category. (I'll reluctantly spend some significant time with a paintbrush in my hand this weekend, too.)

I am a rank amateur blues harmonica player. I sat in for Rob Roy Parnell several years ago when he was just getting started. A friend of mine's band was backing him up and called me on stage to play harmonica.

I was reminded of another "talent" that I have at this week's ABA conference. Several of us were sitting around in the lounge after dinner and somehow the conversation came around to naming all the states. I can verbally list all 50 states in alphabetical order in less than 20 seconds. I don't know how much of an ACTUAL talent that is, but BOL poster EllenA can vouch for the accuracy of this claim, as she was there.

I came about this talent from helping my oldest daughter with geography homework when she was in the 3rd or 4th grade - she had to learn the states in alphabetical order, so we made a contest of it to keep saying them faster and faster. It's amazing how these things stick with you, though. My daughter is now a rising Junior in college, and we both can still do this.

My son and I can both perform this feat. I learned in a song in grade school that names the 50 states in alphabetical order and my son learned the same song. He's now a junior in high school. It can be quite a musing to do that in a social setting.

As did I. Following that, our geography instructor demanded we also memorize all their capitals as well.

I didn't learn a state song - but I did learn the one naming the books of the Bible. I still find myself singing it in my head when trying to find a book!

Know them is one thing - can you say them all out loud in under 20 seconds? That's the challenging part. Sixteen seconds is my best time.

Did you ever hear Rockapella's song that names all of the states and their capitals?

I learned that one also. I remember it was in practicing for competitions on who could locate a verse first. Don't remember what the competitions were called at the moment though.

I most likely have heard it, although when I hear about Rockapella all that comes to mind is "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego".

Sword Drills! I remember them well. I always envied the kids who had tabs on their Bibles for all the books.

I doubt I could name the states in alphabetical order in less than 20 seconds. I always have to sing them and keep on beat so that slows me way down.

Have you ever played Cranium? My family refuses to play with me anymore. It has a category for spelling words backwards.

Cranium is a great game! I love it. They have one for kids called Cranium Cadoo that is a lot of fun as well. It's the first kids game I've ever seen that is really challenging for 7 to 12 year olds, but still fun and not over everyone's head.

I must say when MagicBanker named the states in order in a rush I couldn't say anything for a couple of seconds... now THAT's magic

I thought Rockpella was the name of a Nylons CD.

Thanks, I would have gone mad trying to remember. We weren't allowed to use Bibles with tabs.
