Mike Huckabee and Chuck Norris campaining with God on their side on a Sunday afternnon in Iowa:

Quote:
"Praise the Lord," Huckabee began. "What a wonderful day the Lord has made."

Huckabee wife, Janet, also spoke at the rally, describing her husband in deeply religious tones.

"Mike is a leader who's capable of touching our souls. Mike's going to bring us together. Mike's going to rekindle a compassion in our society for the weakest among us," she said, using words that call to life the candidate's strong pro-life stand.

Norris, an outspoken Christian, continued the theme at the campaign stop.

"I'm here by the grace of God," he began, and later teased about the multitude of jokes about his tough-guy persona to be found on the internet. "Chuck Norris doesn't need to read the internet to know how tough Chuck Norris is."

It isn't enough to ask politicians to tell the truth, Norris said. "We must select politicians who know the truth."

Ron, can you handle a preacher as your President?

(from offstage: OH, JUST POST THE REAL ARTICLE ALREADY!)

Here goes:

(THE POLITICO) COLUMBIA. S.C. and MANCHESTER, N.H. - In a giant Sunday afternoon rally suffused with Christian - and at times messianic - rhetoric, Barack Obama made his largest-scale pitch to black and white Democrats of South Carolina, the third and most devout presidential primary state. The crowd filled nearly half of the 80,000-seat Williams-Brice Stadium to hear the Illinois senator and talk show host Oprah Winfrey...

"I give all praise and honor to God," Obama began. "Look at the day the Lord has made." Obama's wife, Michelle, opened the rally with a description of her husband that could, at moments, have been a description of Jesus Christ. "We need a leader who's going to touch our souls. Who's going to make us feel differently about one another. Who's going to remind us that we are one another's keepers. That we are only as strong as the weakest among us," she said, echoing biblical passages.

Winfrey also touched on Christian themes that had not been highlighted in Iowa. "It's amazing grace that brought me here," she began, adding that she was "stepping out of my pew" - television - to engage in politics. It isn't enough to tell the truth, Winfrey said. "We need politicians who know how to be the truth."

Winfrey also recalled a story from "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," a 1974 film based on Ernest Gaines' 1971 novel. In Winfrey's telling, the protagonist - an old woman who had survived slavery and the Civil War - would ask every child, "Are you the one? Are you the one?" "I do believe I do today we have the answer to Miss Pittman's question - it's a question that the entire nation is asking - is he the one?" Winfrey said. "South Carolina - I do believe he's the one."

According to one academic discussion of the book by Christopher Mulvey, a professor at University of Winchester in the United Kingdom, the passage continues to ask whether the child is the one who will "carry part of our cross," a "messianic figure."

i lol'd at this in real life.

(imo, the tenor is slightly different. 'capable of' versus 'going to', "'Mike's going to rekindle a compassion in our society for the weakest among us,'she said, using words that call to life the candidate's strong pro-life stand." versus
"Who's going to make us feel differently about one another. Who's going to remind us that we are one another's keepers. That we are only as strong as the weakest among us" "We need politicians who know how to be the truth." isn't saying "knowing the truth" ie acting as a conduit from God...)

I like how using Biblican language to justify government action to prevent the killing for conveniene of the unborn is frightening, while using Biblical language to justify government transfer payments is a-ok. But, whatever helps you sleep, Ron.

By the way, claiming someone "knows how to be the truth" is quite a bit more strident than claiming someone "knows the truth". I actually was trying to dial it back a bit in the fake article, 'cause I thought it was too over the top and nobody would believe that someone had really said that about a presidential candidate - I was really shocked to see it.

Ron, that was weak.

Have you ever, ever admitted that maybe you were wrong about something?
