there is no accounting for taste!
its like pornography, you know jeans when you see them, and when someone is pushing the limitations of the policy
our bank went from blue jean Fridays to casual back office everday and now, starting in 2008 no more casual on any day, and the only blue jean days are when we are fundraising for a nonprofit

I say it has more to do with the stitching and pocket style. I used to work with a girl who did the same thing. She wore a pair of pants to work that were beige, but they were jeans because of the style and pockets. It bothers me when people are allowed to get away with bending the rules, and like Pale said, people like that are the ones that eventually ruin it for everyone.

We have people around here that try the same thing, they will wear cordury pants and think it's fine because they aren't "denium".

jeans are made of denim, regardless of the color or style. Corduroys are not jeans, as they are not made of denim material. Not sure what you mean by the "front zipper" as all my pants have a zipper in front.
Corduroy pants can be worn as either casual or dressy, depending on the style. LL Bean sells what they call "corded twills" which is a very nice pair of dress cords.

I think it's great that LL Bean sells dressy cords, but what I've seen around here is "going to the mall" cords. We also have folks that think that colored jeans aren't jeans because they aren't blue. LOL

Cords and Cord/Jeans are definitely two different thing. Dress Cords and nice dressy casual slacks made from corduroy. Corn/Jeans have the patch-type pockets, and double sewn seams.
Our definition of jeans goes by pockets and seams - and our HR huncho walks around on casual days looking at peoples butts for the type of pockets they have on their pants.

We have a pretty casual policy when it comes to jeans. We can wear colored jeans (except for blue) any day of the week, and then we can wear blue jeans on Fridays.

jeans are made out of denim and if they have those silver things on the pockets, I dont care what color they are. People wear jeans all the time here and think it's okay because they arent blue.....kind of like those ladies that wear dressy shorts and think thats ok - they are still shorts - regardless of how they fit.

Our dress code spells out that Denim is not allowed AT ALL and also that Jeans are not allowed - indicating that those are 2 different things.

MBGuy, there are denim skirts and denim dresses that don't fit the definition of jeans. Denim is the fabric - jeans is the style.

where i come from, those are termed jean-skirts and jean-dresses.
i really don't think there is hard and fast rule regarding the definition.
has someone wiki'ed it?

Our policy is: No jeans or jean styled pants of any color or fabric type. Denim is allowed only if it is styled at least "business casual" and is not of a jean style.
That just about takes care of all the loop holes!

I posted a thread a long while ago about bank uniforms. We are required to wear uniforms. The bank purchases them for each employee - even the men have suits, and we all look alike. They are very nice 5 suits, 5 blouses, 5 slacks, however, it really gets old. Very seldom do we get to wear jeans. We have a "uniform calendar" that tells us whats to wear each day. Do any of you out there in bank land have to wear uniforms?
