out of the frying pan...
Security Investigator - I agree with most of your points, but would ask that you do a little research on PETA and read their manifesto. They ARE after 'equal' rights and against animal ownership in any form. They don't adopt pets because they don't believe in pets...they want all the creatures to run free and feral, and we humans should seek only to serve them. Not all animal rights groups are quite this extreme, but PETA is.

I commend you on your dedication in being full vegan. There's no way I could do it - nevermind giving up meat (which I've done off and on a few times) just the thought of finding alternative material replacements for everything I own that is leather is enough to make me feel faint.

PETA Killed 97 Percent of 'Companion Animals' in 2006

News Edition: 01/17/2008

WASHINGTON-- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.
(story continued below...)

Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007.

"Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support. PETA is not one of them."

In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.

Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case. Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters.

"PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see. The scale of PETA's hypocrisy is simply staggering."

SI I appreciate your opinion. I am in no way against the Vegan lifestyle, my brother-in-law is a Vegan! The point I was trying to make is that people who claim to care about animal welfare should take some personal action. My whole family (including my brother-in-law) adopts animals who need homes and continues to do so.

IMO, PETA is an extreme organization who cares more about getting publicity then the well being of animals. The fact that they would rather euthenize pets instead of adopt them seems to drive that point home.

Sing - don't be a snollygoster, there are two sides to every story and you don't appear to want to listen to or check out the PETA side - you may as well work for the meat industry.

The Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF; formerly the Guest Choice Network), is a U.S. nonprofit organization funded, according to its website, by restaurants, food companies and "more than 1,000 concerned individuals" CCF has campaigned against positions held by Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and Oceana.

The group was created in 1995 as the Guest Choice Network by Richard Berman, executive director of the public affairs firm Berman and Company, with $600,000 from the Philip Morris tobacco company.

Way to go, Sing - great source to support your snollygoster view.

Hey X, were you inspired and decided to save a homless animal over the weekend?

X I did not use one article published by one organization to form my opinion about PETA. Spare me.

Fried chicken (double battered):

1. Soak fryer pieces (bone-in, skin-on) in buttermilk overnight.
2. Heat oil in heavy, tall sided pot.
3. Roll drained and dried chicken in seasoned flour
4. Dip floured chicken sections in mixture beaten egg and buttermilk
5. Roll chicken in another mixture of seasoned flour and fine bread crumbs
6. Drop into hot oil with enough space between pieces so that they do not stick together.
7. Turn frying chicken over when it begins to turn light brown.
8. Remove when golden brown, crispy, and firm to the touch.
9. Drain. Eat. Enjoy.
10. Receive voodoo hex from X.
