Actually, I believe it is a FORMER felon who has served his time in punishment of his crimes. From his book, he has a lot of useful information to share that will make us better and more secure organizations.

Which book are you reading - The Art of Deception or Catch Me if You Can? I've read both and both were good, although TAOD had much more useful information to help us prevent the types of fraud schemes he talked about.

Catch Me If You Can was an excellent read.

Mr. Abagnale's seminars are even better, it's amazing what he did.

MB--TAOD. CMIYC was a cute movie, but never read the book. (I feel like I'm in the Sleepless in Seattle movie.)

When you think about the differences between work and prison, maybe prison isn't so bad...

IN PRISON.......You spend the majority of your time in an 8x10 cell.
AT WORK........You spend most of your time in a 6x8 cubicle.

IN PRISON.......You get three meals a day.
AT WORK........You get a break for 1 meal and you have to pay for it.

IN PRISON.......You get time off for good behaviour.
AT WORK........You get rewarded for good behaviour with more work.

IN PRISON.......A guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you.
AT WORK........You must carry around a security card and unlock and open all the doors yourself.

IN PRISON........You can watch TV and play games.
AT WORK.........You get fired for watching TV and playing games.

IN PRISON.......You get your own toilet.
AT WORK........You have to share.

IN PRISON.......They allow your family and friends to visit.
AT WORK........You cannot even speak to your family and friends.

IN PRISON.......All expenses are paid by taxpayers with no work required.
AT WORK........You get to pay all the expenses to go to work and then they deduct taxes from you salary to pay for prisoners.

IN PRISON.......You spend most of your life looking through bars from inside wanting to get out.
AT WORK........You spend most of your time wanting to get out and go inside bars.

IN PRISON......There are wardens who are often sadistic.
AT WORK.......They are called supervisors.

IN PRISON.......You have unlimited time to read e-mail jokes.
AT WORK........You get fired if you get caught.

NOW GET BACK TO WORK!

Would I turn him loose with a password to the network? Probably not.

Can we learn from him? Most definitely.

When the FBI wanted to do a more effective job finding and stopping serial killers, they instituted a very effective program under which they interviewed serial killers that had been caught and incarcerated. They learned enormous lessons from them about how they think, what actions you might be able to anticipate, etc.

Kevin knows how social engineers do their thing because he was one. Now, his goal is to help us stay at least one step ahead of them.

Mary: Lots of Ex-Hackers are employed as IT Security consultants after they do their time of course .

The Best Teachers are the EX-Cons .

an example is The ARMED ROBBERY FROM AN OFFENDER'S PERSPECTIVE: IMPLICATIONS FOR PREVENTION 150 Pgaes Report by Australian Institute of Criminology , where 110 convicted robbers, both male and female, were interviewed in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland; additional perspectives were sought from robbery
victims, police officers and bank security staff. Information collected from the robbers focussed on one particular robbery,and covered the following topics:
. their modus operandi;
. their assessment of security arrangements, including police activity;
. the likelihood of crime being shifted to other areas if the banks become too tough a target;
. their progression in crime;
. their attitudes to staff, customers and hostages; and
. their reaction to punishment and penalties.

The report Provided better Understanding for Prevention of armed robbery.

another example is :Kenneth Rijock, a former Miami lawyer who was convicted of money laundering and served two years in federal prison, now gives lectures on money-laundering and how to combat it.
