Thinking of going to either Puerto Rico or St Thomas (don't have passports) at the end of March for our anniverasy but have no idea what side of the island is best, where to avoid, etc. We only take special vacation about once in 10 years so don't want to be disappointed! Interested in historical sites, hiking, fishing, lazy naps on the beach and of course shopping. Does anyone have some good advice?

if you don't have a passport you may not get one by the end of next month, may need to pay to expedite processing (about another $65 I think)
I would pick St. Thomas

I've been to both as ports of call on a cruise. In Puerto Rico I only visited Old San Juan, but it was very neat. Without a doubt I would pick St. Thomas and spend the entire time at Meagan's Bay. But I'm a beach bum at heart...

I spent about an hour in Puerto Rico waiting to change planes to go to St. Thomas and then cruise the BVI, and they stole my credit card number that I used IN THE AIRPORT STORE to purchase a magazine and drink. I would avoid PR.
St. Thomas is beautiful. Why not consider a cruise to all the islands? They are reasonable, if not cheap, and fun.
I bet you could get a passport within the time frame you are working with if you go soon.

I have a shirt from Abercrombie that says, "I slept..." - oh nevermind it will just be edited.
I've never been, but would like to go.

Snowqueen, that wasn't a cliff, it was a barge in the bay.
It's off Norman Island, BVI, and if you jump off the top deck naked, you get a shirt.
Well, females get free shirts, men get nothing. I found that out the hard way.
I am sure someone else just gave her one.

Thanks everyone. We won't need pasports as they are the United States Virgin Islands. Been thinking about the cruise idea but don't know that I want to be stuck on a boat. But maybe I will look into that.

I have taken a cruise, visited St.Thomas, and Puerto Rico. You have to be very careful where you go in Puerto Rico. If you are at a resort, don't leave the confines of the resort. In my opinion, St. Thomas is the best. Laid back, beautiful water, beautiful beaches, etc etc. You can't miss Meagans Bay. I hear St. Johns is even better. I would go back to st. Thomas any day. I wouldn't give you a dime for Aruba or Curacau, and St. Martin did not impress. You will not be disappointed if you go to St. Thomas or St. John. Please just think twice before going to Puerto Rico. Have a lovely trip.

There is nothing wrong with Puerto Rico, it is very beautiful. Old San Juan is really a cool old town. Like anywhere else, you don't just go wondering to far off the beat path at night- you don't even do that in Chicago or DC or any other large US city. As far as not stepping off a resort, why go then. If you go to St. Thomas (not my choice of the place to stay)definitely take one of the boats over to St. John for a visit at least. If you want to stay inexpensively (well less expensive than hotels or resorts) go to VRBO.com and rent a house. I have done that five times in St. John. You can rent a small jeep for about $40-$45 a day and go everywhere. Of course there is only basically one road . If you don't like driving straight up and straight down on the left hand side of the road in American built cars - driving in the VIs might not be your cup of tea. If you plan on doing any snorkeling in St. John, we have always liked Waterlemon Cay. We really like the restaurant Tage (340-715-4270). Also, the Asolare restaurant is really cool for a sunset and drink, but I wouldn’t necessarily eat there. If you want to see some incredible jewelry, go see Michael Banzhaf Studio’s, it’s right next to Mongoose Junction. If you are going to do some exploring and make it to Coral Bay – you need to stop for a burger at Skinny Leg’s – it’s a real funky little place.

I spent a week in Puerto Rico and had a blast! A friend was stationed there with the Coast Guard so I didn't stay on a resort - I stayed at the home of he and his wife. They took me all over that island - the people were friendly, food was good, traffic laws (more of a suggestion really) were scary! We hiked all over the rain forest. We didn't get to spend very much time in Old San Juan - would love to go back for that.
Curacao is not a place to go for excitement. Its nice if you just want to rest and relax. The hotel I stayed in was also a casino, but I don't really get into that sort of thing. It is a beautiful little island.
It was those gorillas in Venezuala who sliced open my suitcase and searched thru it for things they wanted. You definitely didn't leave the american hotel compound there if you wanted to be safe.

Curacao is not a place to go for excitement. Is that like the liquor? btw, how is that pronounced: cur-ra-sow? or cur-rock-o

waldensouth-couldn't agree more about Curacao....we stayed at Breezes which was ok, but not much to do on the islande...spent a day in the main city (I forget the name) and got screwed on a jeep "tour"...the driver was a schill for the "attractions" his buddys owned...
The BVI's were great-Anegada and Tortola were fantastic.
