I think she is away from Alaska this week - in Boston, perhaps?

Too bad - I'd like to hear her perspective on feeling an earthquake at the crack of dawn!

I don't think Dawnie is home. Last I heard she was on her way to Boston for a meeting. No doubt that she will be disappointed that she missed it and won't be able to add it to her extensive list of experiences!

I was on the 4th floor of a Japanese hotel, our first night in town, when a quake hit. I woke up and accused my husband of shaking the bed.

Dawnie needs to take back extra duct tape in case repairs are needed.

These were common when I lived in Japan. But as a kid, I just thought it was cool to have your bed vibrate on the floor.

Several years ago, a small quake was felt in Roswell, NM where I lived.

I remember dreaming about some shaking - then woke up really, really late. My alarm clock was unplugged! I was really embarassed to tell my boss that I thought an earthquake had shaken the plug to my alarm clock loose. I was greatly relieved to hear that there was an actual quake!

Let's think about this for a minute... Dawnie leaving town and an earthquake happens. The two couldn't be connected, could they? Nah!

If Boston gets hit with a quake after she leaves the CRAWiz training sessions, we'll know! And I'm filling the sandbags tonight, just in case! I know just the right beach, down in Eastham . . .

AT 705 PM CDT SUNDAY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HASTINGS
RECEIVED REPORTS OF LARGE HAIL IN AURORA...HAMILTON COUNTY NEBRASKA.
INITIAL REPORTS STATED THAT THE HAIL HAD PENETRATED THE ROOF OF A
HOME, LEAVING HOLES IN THE STRUCTURE LARGE ENOUGH TO CRAWL THROUGH.

THE STONES WERE SAVED AND PLACED IN A FREEZER AT THE RESIDENCE AND
TWO NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EMPLOYEES WERE SENT TO ASSESS THE DAMAGE
AND RECORD THE SIZE.

THE HAILSTONE MEASURED 6.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH A CIRCUMFERENCE
OF 17.3 INCHES...AND WEIGHED 1.33 POUNDS.

THIS COMPARES TO THE POTTER NEBRASKA HAILSTONE ON JULY 12, 1928. THE
POTTER NEBRASKA HAILSTONE WAS 5.4 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND WEIGHED
APPROXIMATELY 1.5 POUNDS.

...LARGEST HAILSTONE ON RECORD...

PRIOR TO TODAY...THE LARGEST HAILSTONE ON RECORD OCCURRED IN
COFFEYVILLE KANSAS ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1970. THIS STONE MEASURED 5.7
INCHES IN DIAMETER...17.5 INCHES IN CIRCUMFERENCE AND WEIGHED 1.67
POUNDS.

Lestie, what was your take on the UFO crash in 1947? We will ever know the truth?

Bob - what I know for sure is that Roswell has been pretty smart in taking advantage of the hype this is enjoying right now, but the glut of the alien stuff is endlessly annoying (to me, anyway). That festival they hold in the summer was enough to send me on a vacation away from Roswell every year I lived there.

As far as whether or not it's true - all I can tell you is that my grandfather, who is an old rancher near Corona, NM (where this actually, supposedly happened) doesn't believe much of anything without irrefutable proof. He's practical, logical, and skeptical most of the time. I asked him about it, and he said that he talked to the old man who 'found it' - and he believed him. That gives it some credence, in my book.

WOW! Sounds like I missed a fun shake up (though the turbulance on the plane might have been about the same).

The reason there would be no damage...is that no one in their right mind wants to live on Adak

While I missed this one....I'm experiencing the nightmare of a heat wave in Boston. Should hit 88 today and they're talking 100 on Friday! I'm going to melt!!!

We had a 7.4 quake last year that lasted for well over a min. While 60 seconds might not seem long...let me tell you, when the entire world you're in is rolling in waves...it's a very long time. I wasn't scared...but it was an odd feeling, knowing you couldn't really do anything to get away from the danger. Bizzare experience.

Little known fact....Alaska has more earthquakes annually than the entire US combined experiences and...bonus fact...more people are killed by moose than bear (but they're typically tourists so no biggie)

Maybe that's why they closed the Navy base there a few years ago. I was living on Adak when the '64 earthquake hit Anchorage and did major damage. They were worried that a big wave would come out and cover the island. It didn't happen, which was fortunate for us. My parents took some great pics of buildings that sank to the point that the sidewalk was close to even with the roof of some of them.

The wave took out Valdez instead. The entire city moved upland due to the earthquake and the wave afterwards. Largest loss of life was in Valdez after the 64 quake (9.4 quake).

The base that was on Adak is now being used for low income housing by the local native community, compliments of me...well ok my nifty bank. I wonder if I've been to your house???? LOL How's that for a small world!

So how's the trip going so far? Becareful what you say about our weather! We just came through a winter that wouldn't stop and a spring that never came. We have been stuck in an April weather pattern since, well, April! (Which reminds me of a joke: If April showers bring May flowers, what do Mayflowers bring? .........................Pilgrims! Get it? The ship Mayflower brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth in 1620? Sorry - local joke.) Anyway this is the weather I wait for all winter and hope it lasts all the way through October!

It's lovely but HOT so far Tom. Yes I know, you folks are dying for this stuff, but us little Alaskan girls, melt!

We've power shopped at each break, dined far too late, far too often. Hit a game the first night (wonderful seats compliments of Meridian Investments)

Tonight...we nap!!! Jet lag is sinking in I can barely stay awake.

That would be considered at cool front here! Today's heat index around 108-110 degrees! Talk about a really bad hair day

Glad to hear that your bank has done something to help on the housing front. I only vaguely remember what ours looked like back then.

We lived in officer's quarters, which was a duplex on Sitkin (Dr., St., Rd.- not sure which). They could have torn them down and replaced them over the years, since it was so long ago - but then I was only 3 1/2 when we moved back to the lower 48 . . .

3 and 1/2...so that house would be about 20 years old now right

We excel at remote housing. It's a little passion of mine. Luckily the bank agrees with me.

Your home probably is there. They haven't had much new construction, but the base housing was newer than any of the village housing. It was interesting to work with the base and the village on the purchase. In the long run it was a win win for all...since the military would have just left it to rot and the village really needed the homes!

I wish - no wait - no I don't. My stepson just turned 19 last month, so I would have a hard time convincing someone I was that young!
