FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
You know, many of our early leaders were either home-schooled or had no education at all. Thomas Edison was home schooled after the teacher kicked him out of school for being "addle-pated" or retarded. Apparently he didn't think like everyone else - fortunately for us.

For those parents with the time and skill to do so - I think its great.

I, for one, am glad that they're looking at the parent's ability to teach. Plus, I don't agree with home schooling. The children need interaction with other children their age. They need to learn to work with others and deal with the noise and occasional chaos of a classroom!

So, are you saying that parents should not have the right to decide what is right for their kids and be allowed to homeschool them at all?

No, that's not what I'm saying. If they want to homeschool their kids they should be qualified to do so, and my feeling is that it just should not be done. Unless the child is uncapable of attending a school for either a physical or a mental standpoint.

strangely, I can't seem to find any case where a home-school child was shot and killed by a classmate.

home schooled children do not live in a vaccuum. I currently have 2 on my soccer team, and neither crave any additional attention, and neither has issues with interaction.

are you aware of the number of uncertified teachers these days? Home school is often a better option

my kids are well adjusted little social butterflies, fortunately my wife is certified by the state of Texas; but I had to retire from teaching after the middle school curriculum; it was beyond my skill set

How does anyone expect the teachers unions to indoctrinate our kids if they are schooled at home. Let's give the unions a break. I mean come on on already.

Uncertified teachers employed by public school systems? Really? Do provide details.

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9901EFDD1F3EF93AA15757C0A9649C8B63

About 9 percent of New York City's 12,828 uncertified public school teachers have failed a basic exam required for certification at least four times, according to data from the Board of Education that for the first time breaks down teachers' performance in the test.

I believe there is also reference to uncertified teachers in the following book, though I have not read it:
http://books.google.com/books?id=PRsT79S...p;hl=en#PPA1,M1

Also from that NY Time article (dated 2002, by the way),
Quote:
Starting in September 2003, only certified teachers will be able to work in the city's public schools, mandated by a rule passed in 1998 by the State Board of Regents. Mr. Levy voted for this rule when he was a Regent, he said. About 16 percent of the city's roughly 80,000 public school teachers are uncertified, compared with less than 4 percent in the rest of the state.

I wonder what the percentage is today, 5 years after the implementation of the 2003 law? Lower than 4%?

we still have a program in Texas for uncertified teachers in the public school system, it may be different here than in NY - we have population explosions and can't keep up with the necessary staff

Our children went to Publc School, were Home Schooled, and to Private School. We chose what was right for the child at the given time in their life. The current Calif Appeals Court decision now makes this Parental Decision a criminal act
For those who wish to be educated & informed I think you can probably find some research on the Home School Legal Defense Association website - It has been 7 years since we homeschooled our son, but I think this is where the data I am remembering came from.
The research showed home school students in general scored as well or better on standardized tests & the scores did not vary much at all by the education level of the parents.
Meaning parents who did not finish HS and home schooled, their children did not score significantly lower than parents who were HS grads, College Grads, or had Advance Degrees.

My sister was an uncertified teacher (in a state with a Democrat governor, so save the invective).
