FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Homeschooled children do not have to spend as much time on each lesson as children in a chaotic school environment. Usually, they are in "class" about 4 hours a day. The one on one attention they receive and the fact that the teacher only has a very limited number of students to contend with contributes to this. This leaves time for other learning experiences. The home school organization in our area takes all the home schooled kids on field trips. Parents involve these kids in sports thru the Y, they are involved in church. I don't see how anyone can say they can't develop social skills.

And there is the obligatory Bush-bashing, from a thread dealing with California home schooling no less! Well done...

Anyhoo, being a Californian who has a number of friends who are teachers from many grade levels, I am sure it as mostly about money (and the union-loving liberal indoctrination of the kids). Schools get money based on attendance, so the more kids that are home-schooled, the less $ for the schools, the lower enrollment means less teachers needed which means less $ for the teachers' unions.

Ask our Governator about those unions. He tried to give power back to the teachers, firefighters, police officer, etc by preventing unions from using dues to support political causes of which the contributors of those funds did not have a voice. Naturally the unions opposed and managed to deceive their flock into believing the Governator was trying to take away their power. The unions HATE it when everybody (read: anyone but them) has freedom of speech (and a voice as to where their money goes).

Pulling people out of the ditc...
Quote:
we still have a program in Texas for uncertified teachers in the public school system, it may be different here than in NY - we have population explosions and can't keep up with the necessary staff

We have the same in Louisiana, and the Americorp Program (I believe they call it Teach America) is advertising very heavily here that in 6 weeks with a college degree they will allow you to teach...
