Ok, if you were stranded on a deserted Island with a CD player and lots of batteries, what 10 original artist CDs would you want with you (excluding soundtracks containing songs by various artists, various artists compilations, box sets or greatest hits CDs)?
As a bonus--If you could have 12 CDs if number 11 was a soundtrack and number 12 was a greatest hits (or box set)what would they be?
I will log in and answer later.

Well, I am not a huge music fan, so I'd really prefer greatest hits of all of them, and in some cases, I wouldn't choose them if i couldn;t have greatest hits, but out of the 10, I will mention these:
Songs in the Attic - Billy Joel Steppin Out - Joe J. That's the Way of the World - EWF Zenyatta Mondatta - Police Cosmic thing - B52s Goodbye YB Road - Elton Legend - Bob Marley

Oh CubDave, you have the same choices I would make! Although I would like all of Billy Joel's stuff. I love his stuff because he sings in my key! (I definately do not have a girly sounding voice.)
I might subsitute Joe J. with Santana Supernatural. Or maybe Salvador.

Well Nancy, you know, Midwesterners just think alike. I even like Slammin' Spiker's list - I actaully really like The Corrs, but that Beastie Boys pick needs to make it's way out of the Midwest!

Skye2477--Is it "Life's Rich Pageant" or "Lifes Rich Pageant" without the apostrophe--it is both ways on the LP (how old I am). Also, don't forget the Best of Ringo Starr. For a couple of years after the Beatles breakup, he amazingly had the most successful solo career of all the Beatles. FUN STUFF! He never took himself too seriously (like, say, John Lennon). "No, No Song,' "You're Sixteen," (ah, Sam Cooke), "Photograph," and "It Don't Come Easy." Of course, reality quickly set in and Ringo's solo material was largely forgotten and his newer stuff just wasn't as fun. His recent All-Star concerts are wonderful fun though.
CubDave--Isn't it Barbra, not Barbara.
Man, we have good taste in music: How about: Heart.
Love Fleetwood Mac, Wingspan is a great pick, Led Zep....
I have about 200 greatest hits discs and about 1100 albums total. By collectors standards, I am just a neophyte.

Yes Z, it is Barbra. I always spell it wrong though because when I was 5, I heard her song "I'm Five" (and yes, I substituted "Big Boy" for "Big Girl", but because of that song, I named our family dog Barbara (later shortened to Barbie)but her name on the certificate was spelled Barbara. So although I know it's Barbra, I never stopped spelling it Barbara. (too much info??)

Dave, was it just me or did we all hear "The Way We Were" playing in the background of your last post??
Zabaitsu, finally someone else whose collection rivals mine! Maybe if I show my wife your post she'll let me bring my LP's out of the basement!

Barenaked Ladies - Stunt Sting - Desert Rose The Bells of St Genevieve and other Baroque Delights (I don't care about the compilation rules of this contest....I MUST have this disc with me at all times of stress. It's always played at full volume when I'm preping for tests or CRA exams) Eva Cassidy - Songbird (if you don't know Eva's story, look her up on the internet...you'll fall for her hard!) Jewel - Spirit One Barry Manilow Disc (they're interchangable so any will do) Barenaked Ladies - Maybe you should drive Sheryl Cros - The Glove Sessions The Beatles - 1 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue

Dawnie- Are you referring to the song "Scar Tissue" by the Chilli Peppers? That's on the Californication CD, which is good (but doesn't feature enough of Flea's slap bass skill for my taste). I wasn't aware they had a Scar Tissue CD.
Jac- I forgot about Lenny Kravitz. I really like his Greatest Hits CD. There's a musician with some talent!

Oh, I forgot!! Marvin Gaye--"What's Going On"
I'm glad that we're not just making a list of Greatest Hits. Making an album used to be an art. Nowadays, there are typically 2-3 good songs and then filler--and that is on the good albums.

I am terrible with CD titles and don't have time to Google so don't hound me : -Phil Collins or Genesis - any CD's would do, but one must contain "In the Air Tonight" -Lynard Skynard - Sweet Home Alabama -Eric Clapton -Boston and for a country sound.... George Strait - Baby Blue Vince Gill - His Christmas CD But of course, if I am stranded by the ocean I would have to have - Jimmy Buffet (and a Marguerita or Pina Colda) !

Here goes - using only albums I actually own - which is limiting since I tend to go for Greatest hits or compilation type albums. - The Great Divide & Friends - "Dirt & Spirit"
- Randy Travis - "Rise & Shine"
- George Strait - "Live from the Houston Astrodome"
- The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will the Circle be Unbroken - Vol. III"
- Brad Paisley - "Part II"
- Mark Chestnutt - "Longnecks and Short Stories"
- Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson - "VH1 Storytellers"
- Hank Williams Sr., Jr., & III - "Men with Broken Hearts"
- Chris Ledoux - "Live"
- Bill Engvall - "Dorkfish" (because you'd have to laugh occasionally.
However if items 1,4,7, & 8 count as multi-artist compilations since they all have more than one artist (I would consider them more collaborations since more than one artist appears per song.) I would replace with: - The Great Divide - "Revolutions"
- The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Live Two Five"
- Michael Martin Murphy - "Cowboy Songs III - Rhymes of the Renegades"
- Mike McClure - "Twelve Pieces"
For my soundtrack - "O, Brother Where Art Thou" Greatest Hits - Chris LeDoux's "20 Greatest Hits"

Carole King - "Tapestry" Steely Dan - "Aja" Eva Cassidy - "Songbird" (Dawnie: you're starting to spook me! ) Antonin Dvorak - "New World Symphony" Frank Sinatra - "September of My Years" Frank Sinatra - "Songs for Swinging Lovers" Frank Sinatra - "Only the Lonely" James Taylor - "Live in Concert" Louis Armstrong - "Live at Newport Jazz Festival" (I'd add a tenth, but every one I think of is a greatest hits album.) Soundtrack: "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Boxed set: Handel's "Messiah"

I lived on an Island for 30 years....it's fine for a week but than, like everywhere else, it becomes routine! Now I have not gone near a beach in the last 6 years!

Oh no, I have 4 or 5 Marshall Crenshaw albums--including a live album. I plan to get his second and third albums because I just read an article saying that those albums were nearly as good as the first album.
MORE ALBUMS:
Roxy Music "Avalon" Bruce Cockburn "Humans" Peter Case "Man with the Blue Post Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar"

Anything Beach Boys, perhaps some Marley and a bit of classical. Other than that, I think I would take audio books.

That's what I figured! For what it's worth, even though Barbra Streisand made my list, I wouldn't go see Celine Dion in vegas if someone gave me free airfare and front row seats.

I would take the free ride to Vegas, sell my tickets and gamble the money. Then check the local paper to see if Tool is in town.

In no particular order... 1) Fragile by Yes 2) Tchailovsky Piano Concerto No 1 as performed by Van Cliburn 3) Adventures in Time by Dave Brubeck 4) Chicago Transit Authority by Chicago 5) This Strange Engine by Marillion 6) So by Peter Gabriel 7) Dvorak's Symphony No 9 as performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 8) Magnification by Yes 9) Child Is Father To The Man by Blood, Sweat and Tears 10) Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project I really don't have any Greatest Hits, so if I can indulge in two box sets: 11) Time Signatures by Dave Brubeck 12) YesYears by Yes

Did I miss something here? Island and no Buffet?????
This is tough - there is so much good stuff that I would miss so I'll just rattle some off the top of my head. (and since others have broken the rules – I will too)
Rampal & Stern – Mozart
Any top symphony – Vivaldi Four Seasons
The Andrews Sisters - any recording
Bing Crosby – any recording but particularly White Christmas
Rock Roll & Rhythm - (late 50's early 60's of the good stuff from Rhino)
Beach Boys – Endless Summer
The Temptations – Greatest Hits
Kenny G – Duotones (yeah Z I like G )
Jimmy Buffet – Last Mango in Paris
Jimmy Buffet – Songs You Know by Heart
Jimmy Buffet – Hot Water
Jimmy Buffet – Off to See the Lizard
Alan Jackson – Drive
Toby Keith – Unleashed
Patty Loveless – Strong Heart
I'm sorry, I really tried. I guess I just will not be available for "stranded" status - I simply must have more than 12.
