Please settle an internal dispute in my bank. I was under the impression that cross-border ACH transactions are possible but that there is no easy way to distinguish cross-border from other ACH activity. Others in my bank believe that there are no cross-border transactions at the present time.

Who is correct?

The only current way to identify these are if they have a tran code of CBR or PBR. Unfortunately, only one place uses that coding and it's the FED as they are the ONLY institution that have voluntarily identified themselves as a Gateway operator. I don't understand why in the world it was set up that way but it's getting ready to change drastically. I guarantee you are have some cross border transaction but the are coded as another tran code such as CTX, PPD, CCD, or something.

Just to give you a heads up.

You'd better get your ACH folks ready for the upcoming change. Effective March 20, 2009, all internation payments will have a new tran code, IAT (International ACH Transaction).
