The Associated Press has learned that Gen. David Petraeus, the four-star general who has been leading troops in Iraq, has been tapped to become the next commander of U.S. Central Command.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Navy Adm. William Fallon, who stepped down in March.

Taking Petraeus' position as the senior commander in Iraq would be Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, who had until recently been serving as Petraeus' deputy.

Emphasis mine.
Well, who's ready for a summer of all out political warfare regarding the confirmation.
I'm sure Senator Levin (Armed Services Committee) and Senator Biden (Foreign Affairs) are going to have a field day with this...

If they're fools, they'll fight it.

I don't think they are going to fight it. Not if they want to look like they can be bipartisan prior to the election.

Warfare? Why? Petraeus was unanimously confirmed just last year. No one holds him (or any other uniformed officer) responsible for political decisions.

That didn't come across in the hearings a few weeks ago.

I don't know of any blame placed on Petraeus for political decisions at those hearings, as opposed to that directed at the administration.

From the AP story on this:

"Gates said he had consulted with senior lawmakers, including the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., about the nominations, and the defense secretary said he anticipated no Capitol Hill obstacles to confirmation."
