and lots of doggy chew toys. About the cat food...dogs notoriously like cat food! (So do most horses I know)...anyway...if you don't give her cat food/people food and she only has the choice of her dog food (weight maintenance type recommended) she will eat when she gets hungry enough. After awhile...she will eat just fine. (sometimes a little bribary helps...you pretend to eat it and it will likely make her want it more!)

Does she like to chase a ball or other toy? If you can't go for walks play sessions would help also. My mini-schnauzer would fetch the ball or one of her toys for hours!

It's funny, I never feed our dogs or any dog table food. The rest of my family call me "mean" or say "How can you not give them a bite?". Our dog could care less when I am eating, she is not in my face or begging when I eat because she knows she's not getting a bite.
My dad is notorious for feeding dogs from the table and does it all the time. Consequently, when we take our dog over there he has his own dog on one side begging like crazy and ours on the other doing the same thing. How anyone could enjoy a meal like that is beyond me. And both dogs usually end up getting sick the next day.
A few bites of "human" food can be way more calories and fat than what they need. Dogs will eat until they explode! I think that feeding them from the table is far more cruel than adopting the no table food policy and sticking to it. It's really only effective if everyone is on board and you are consistent with it.

I noticed that someone had posted the link to walkydogusa on here. Does anyone have one of those? I have an English Mastiff and he loves to run but I can't keep up with him. I love to ride a bike and thought that might be a good solution for both of us but am kind of leary of it. If anyone has any experience with it or anything similar please let me know.

I have debated this but have been afraid that it would end badly - I don't often go biking by myself - it is usually a family affair and I just feel that having something more substantial than just a lead for a bike ride might be better. I guess I will just have to make a decision at some point.
My English Mastiff is not quite 4 and he is a handful - he has too much energy and that is another reason that I think the biking would do him good.
Thanks for your help - it is nice to know what others are doing in this regard.

Heck, get a greyhound. Believe me, there will be some major running <grin>. Our poor basenji just stands in the middle of the yard when Attitude gets going and tries to block him. It's a hoot.

Well you all have some pretty good points. This is not my first experience with dogs, we had 2 and they were both older dogs and they died withing 4 months of each other. I saw Hazels picture on the Animal Shelter site and went to take a look at her and fell in love and brought her home. I am afraid I have made her what she is today, but Schnzauers are a high spirited dog I have found out. My son has one who never eats anything but dog food (Until she comes to grams), and stays outside with my sons roomates boxer and romps all day, but she still will chew things up. I became very attached to this dog for some reason and my husband says she is obsessed with me.

My whippet-shar pei mix runs like crazy in my back yard too. The labradoodle I'm fostering right now will chase her for a while then sit next to the big oak tree in the middle of the yard and bark until the whippet stops running to wrestle again. They've invented a new game together too. If I stand by the door to the house and throw two tennis balls into the middle of the yard, they will each grab one and then try to tackle each other until the other drops a ball.

When my grandpuppy visits the 2 girls are wrestling most of the time. Hazel gets tired of it and sits out for a while, then here we go again. She loves for Emma to come visit, but man is she glad when she goes home.

Michael - that sounds like a riot.
OK - someone gave up a labradoodle? Don't people just make you angry? Here (my assumptions, of course) someone got an expensive puppy and then felt they couldn't 'deal' with it. That poor baby. I'm so glad you are giving it a good temporary home.

A word of caution about dogs on leashes while biking. One of my best friends did that and her dog saw a rabbit or something and took off. She knocked the bike over and drug Kirsten behind her on her face. Make sure you are careful.

I feel the same way. When we adopted Hazel i could not believe some one had bought her and then didn't want her. That's OK she's mine now and we love her (even if we don't follow the best rules for feeding her).

Music Mom - my sister got a full blooded schnauzer at the animal shelter where she volunteers. Apparently he was a stray and we figure he was either shown or bred. He is gorgeous, but tiny, and had not been fixed. Oscar is about 4-5 years old and weighs about 10-11 pounds, but you wouldn't know it to look at him. He struts around with that chest thrust out and it's hysterical. Now, if he only got along with her Lhasa Apso, Jack. But that's a different story.

I'm so glad you are giving it a good temporary home. Actually, this one makes me proud. An owner, who was losing their home and having to live in a very small apartment with no yard due to a divorce contacted us in order to give the animal up rather than putting it through the situation with having no yard for the puppy to run in, and chosing to move in to an apartment for 1 year while finalizing the divorce and looking for a new home. They are actually paying for the food, grooming, etc. and I am (call me crazy) giving the dog a home until they are settled. The way I look at it, if she's willing to pay for all the upkeep, I'm willing to care for it and give it back to her when she's settled. It's a good deal, and she brings her little boy by to play with the dog with my permission on weekends.

Well at least the son doesn't have the loss of the dog to deal with on top of everything else. I am glad that she felt like she could ask this of you. You deserve cudos for doing what was in the best interest of the puppy...... I am glad both the dogs get along well....

This is the type of scenario I am trying to avoid - I am hoping that something more substantial than a leash will prevent this but - then again I guess a leash might be easier to let go of than something attached to the bike - I just can't decide what to do - I am so confused...........

The things that are designed for biking with a dog are attached to the bike. With a standard leash, I can drop it if the dog gets distracted and decides to take off. With something attached to the bike, I don't have that option.

Michael - thank you so much for that wonderful story. I guess I'm to cynical.
The lady that rescues greyhounds (where we got Attitude) had a similar story. A woman had adopted a female greyhound from her. Later she lost her job, her car and then her apartment. She loved that dog so much that she was the last thing she gave up and it broke her heart. It is nice to know that there are more good people out there than we sometimes realize.

You deserve cudos for doing what was in the best interest of the puppy...... I am glad both the dogs get along well.... The mom didn't ask it of me. She actually called looking for a rescue that could take the dog in. When I found out her situation, I suggested that if the reason was truely because she just couldn't have the dog for a year that she speak with family about taking it in for her. When she said she'd tried and finding it a new home was her last hope, and I heard her start to cry, I offered. I'm a sucker!

It seems for every heart breaking story we hear, someone has one that is uplifting and shows us that there are still truly kind, wonderfuly people in this world, especially here in the thread.
