Hey Anonymous, everybody has to be from somewhere! Actually, Des Moines is a pretty cool place if you know where to look.

Here is a list of things to do:

Science Center
Living History Farms
Botanical Center
Downtown Farmer's Market (lots of great food and the kids will love all the dogs that folks bring along.)
Brand new water parks in Clive and West Des Moines
Iowa State Fair - August 7th to 17th
Simon Estes Amphitheatre (the kids love to dance to the outdoor bands)
Art Center
White Water University Water Park
Blank Park Zoo
Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino (ok, not for the kids!)
Trainland USA (near Des Moines)
Saylorville Lake Recreation Area

This is just a start!

I've heard it said in Texas that Lubbock is a good place to be from. Not necessarily a great place to live, but a darn good place to be from. You are right though, if everyone lived where I live the traffic would be horrible.

The Science Center focuses on fun, hands-on things for kids. Living History Farms, Blank Park Zoo, the Cubs AAA baseball affiliate, the State Fair (in August).

There are a number of other things listed on:

The traffice is already horrible where you live!!

I'm not FROM Lubbock, but I have to defend it - pretty nice place to live. Great cost of living, traffic is not bad at all, plenty to do, and it is the biggest town/city I've ever lived in! Besides - I grew up on the plains - all those trees make me claustrophobic.

Yeah, but imagine if everyone lived here what it would be like.

I'm just having fun with some stereotypes and generalities. If it weren't for the traffic, cost of living, fire ants, allergens, high property taxes, air pollution, poison ivy, oppressive heat, beggars, and mosquitos, Austin would be heaven.

How can you have that many mosquitoes? Don't you have millions of bats living under a bridge? Tell them to quit hanging around and eat some mosquitoes!

Not really from Des Moines, but did live there for seven years - born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, but have moved six times in my adult life (husband's job transfer). We definitely loved living in Des Moines and I would have to say that Cindy Williams' list pretty much says it all!

Yes, we did. It's been years since I was there, but I do remember that it was the "elite" meeting spot of Clear Lake.

That was my families restaurant. My Grandparents bought it as a hotel and turned it into a restaurant. I miss it very much since it burned down!!!
