Hello...a Reg CC question has recently come up at my institution that I would like some opinions on.

How do other institutions handle ATM Deposits of next day items that can't be identified by routing number (official checks, local/state govt checks, etc...)? The only accomodation that Reg CC seems to make for ATM deposits of these items is to allow us to delay availability by one additional day, making these second day items.

While we can require a special deposit slip for these items, there is nothing in the reg that would allow us to require the customer to make the deposit with a teller as a condition to get expedited availability. They even talk about special ATM envelopes in the commentary.

Is there any issuance you know of that give banks some relief on this point? How does your bank handle the deposit of next day items through the ATM?

Thanks!

Where the heart is
Do you have an automated system for processing ATM deposits that does not allow for a visual inspection of the items?

At our bank, we have a dual control for removing ATM envelopes. These are opened up and processed by a teller in our Operations area. This allows someone to review the items being deposited to determine any holds that might apply.

Bonnie,

Thanks for the response. We have a high speed processing environment and the checks are not reviewed visually by the branch maintaining the ATM.
