We have a customer who opened an account today with a large check that we later found out is drawn on a closed account. My CSR is asking if we have to give the check back to the customer when she returns? I am new to this and have no idea. Any help would be appreciated.

And you titled this "Need a quick answer on SAR" for what reason? To get our attention?

The check has no value. I recommend against returning it. If you decide to sic the police on her, you'll need the check as evidence.

And, for whatever it's worth, you said "large check." If it's for $5,000 or more, file the SAR.
