This has been discussed before. A search should yield results. But the net net net is that if you are subject to SOX, I believe it is Section 404 that applies, if you are dealing with securities, SEC rules apply, otherwise you ask yourself, if this were paper, would I keep it? A mortgage loan inquiry/complaint or CRA comment are examples of what you'd keep.
Lastly, if you do keep them, you are required to be able to find them based on criteria like author or content. This is under the federal rules of evidence.
