Anyone know where I can get software similar to DVD X for ripping and burning DVDs?

I assume that this is purely for backup and archiving purposes Swimware.
Alcohol is the answer to all of your problems.
The great thing about alcohol is not only can you create physical copies of your software / dvds, but the software allows you to create "virtual" cds / dvds, that you can access much faster than a physical cd / dvd.
The core of my home theatre system is a quiet form factor PC that has a USB 2.0 hub with multiple external hard drives. The external hard drives contain my entire DVD collection in digital format (and two other HDs that act as my TiVo).
So, when I want to watch a movie, all I need to do is use my wireless remote to select a digitally stored DVD, double-click, and away I go. No need to physically place the DVD in the drive.
Perhaps the nerdiest thing I have ever done in my life was ripping the director's cut of all three LOTR movies, editing out the credits, and putting them together. I have yet to watch the entire thing in one go.

Chi, ditto on J.L.J.'s comment. You could have a profitable sideline going for you with this. That would be so wonderful! Can you also download Videos for storage? That would be far better than trying to replace every video I have with DVDs.

I'd love to copy the kids DVD's...they are pretty bad about putting them up correctly and the original's end up scratched to to the point of not being able to watch them anymore. I wouldn't have any idea on where to start though.

Funny that you mention that. I've actually been working on a business plan for this type of thing. I'm looking to deploy pc-based home theatre systems and also helping people create a digital music library and the ability to play it wirelesslythroughout their entire house.
The Sonos system is a little bit on the pricey end; however, there are cheaper solutions out there; however, Sonos is like the iPod of digital music systems.

Let's avoid the word "download" as it is an inappropriate term for what you're attempting to accomplish (I know this terminology can be difficult, but if you understand the nuts and bolts of what you're attempting to do, it makes the task MUCH easier, as you can find most of this information on the internet by using google).
What you're getting at is converting your VHS tapes to DVD. Indeed, this is possible, and, depending on your geographic location, there are probably shops or individuals who would be willing to do this for you. You can do it yourself; however, you need the right equipment (specifically, a special graphics card for your computer and software).

I can't even figure out how to hook my sons X box up to the tv in his room.
I'm going to assume his tv has a couple of RCA Jacks.
For the laymen, RCA Jacks are the row of small, circular plugs found on the back or in front of tvs, vcrs, cable boxes, sound systems, or other devices that use RCA Connections.
For the X-box, you have three of them, red (audio channel), white, (audi channel), and yellow (video channel). All you need to do is make sure the correct colors coming FROM the X-box are plugged into the appropriate colors going IN to the tv.
Also, make sure the ac adapter (power supply) is plugged into the back of the X-box and into a wall.
Once everything is connected, turn on the tv and the x-box. Here's the tricky part: usually you have to switch to a "video" input on the tv to display the device on the RCA connection on the tv. Honestly, that's the hardest part, because unless it says "video" or some obvious button on the remote / tv, you'll be looking forever to find it.

Well, if you're adventurous, check out the Alcohol link I provided above. I don't know how much effort you want to put into learning a piece of software, but if you decide to give it a whirl, it's easy enough to create digital copies of the DVDs which you can then write back to DVD so you'll always be able to have a good copy of the DVD despite any scratches.
Old DVDs make great coasters.

Ok...I'm not that bad! It doesn't have the white, yellow and red plug ins (RCA jacks...I'll use that from now on). It has the single screw on (cable/antenna) type and only one of them. Someone told me that I could find an adapter...but I haven't yet.
Yes...I know it's an old tv...but it still works good so why pitch it and buy a 7 year old kid a new one?

the adapter you need is an RF adapter. Or, if you have a VCR hooked up to the TV already, you can connect the Xbox that way. Most VCR's have those RCA input jacks. That is now my kids have their Gamecube hooked up to their old cheap TV-through the old cheap VCR.

He doesn't have a vcr...it's the old cheap tv from the horse trailer. It keeps him and the X Box out of my living room!

Ok...then you need an RF adaptor mentioned above. They run between $10 and $20. You'll have to have an open power outlet.

Han Solo uses AnyDVD here on Coruscant. If you already use Nero for burning, AnyDVD will automatically "backup" your Movies And ya thought Han was only good at smuggling

If you're looking for freeware or shareware programs, you might want to take a look at:
Mac -- Mac the Ripper.
Windows -- DVD Cloner

DVD Shrink is a good free app. DVD Decoder is good, too.
