Recently Hindu crowds took to the streets in demonstrations. There were placards, chants, marches, some weapons display. Pictures were burned, effigies burned and beaten with sticks.

The offense?

Richard Gere kissed Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. On TV.

Which prompts the question, is Hinduism inherently violent?

A BOLCBT representative offered this statement, "It's certainly not my place to say, but I am disturbed not only by the violence displayed in response to a simple act of affection, but by the lack of criticism from the Hindu community. And have you ever read their scriptures? Full of blood and war! They even have a god of destruction. That should tell you everything you need to know."

Hinduism is not violent at all. The Bhagavad Gita, much of which takes place during war, is not a book of war, but of wisdom being disseminated by Krishna. Hinduism, in fact, is one of the most tolerant and univeral of organized religions in its spiritual teaching, in that Hinduism recognizes the legitimacy of any spiritual system that as a potential path to full liberation and fulfillment.

As for the "god of destruction" namely, Kali, this has been so twisted by the western mind, especially as expressed, however entertaining it was, in the Inidana Jones Movie "The Temple of Doom".

Kali is not evil or violent by the definition we understand it. The Hindus simply reflect on the reality of construction and destruction in the universe, thus in the Hindu Trinity, Brahma creates, Vishnu nurtures, and Kali destroys, so that creation starts anew, a continuous cycle.

Obviously, it is far more in-depth and complex than what I have touched on, but this is one aspect of it.
