"Worse, public lotteries, with their glitzy false promises of instant wealth, are a tax on poverty -- as David Brooks of The New York Times has noted, households with an income under $13,000 spend an average of $645 annually on scratch-off tickets, meaning the poor are the main group throwing away cash at government lotto sites. "

Gregg Easterbrook, ESPN TMQ column.

Way, way south.
Hey, hey, you must not be allowed to think for yourself, or to be able to control your own urges, Komrade.

The government will disallow this activity ASAP because you cannot handle the responsibility.

Outside A Garage
A Tennessee congressman has proposed legislation that would limit lottery winnings of anyone on public assistance to 600.00. I hope this catches on to all other states.

Im not sure if your posting this because you agree with it or you think its funny that an ESPN columnist is actually claiming something like this. The difference I think is, if I don't enter a lottery I won't go to jail.

Unfortunately, you're right Cooler Czar. This isn't much different from the claim that "the man" (whoever that is these days) is trying to keep poor people down by opening up liquor stores in certain neighborhoods. Last time I checked, there was no mandatory requirement to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

TMQ is not claiming this, as he clearly quoted David Brooks, who is claiming this.

I thought it was funny, but if you read TMQ, you know the author covers many topics.

I think it is an interesting stat that the poorest spend 5% of their income in lottery tickets and now we are providing tax "credits" to increase their salary further.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
The lottery is a tax for people who are bad at math -

I don't know who originally said it, but it certainly is true.

That's similar to the concept the CA lottery uses in their advertising, Wally. "You can't win if you don't play." Of course, you won't lose if you don't play, either. smile

I think, as a matter of pure morality, anyone that supports progressive taxation has to be a little goofed up to also support a state lottery.
