My sister just got a new black lab puppy and wants some help with a name. The puppy is a girl and she is thinking she wants a name that is less traditional and somewhat unique. Bring on the suggestions!

I've always liked names from Greek mythology for pets. One day, I will finally get my male dog named Zeus... Female names could be Juno, Pandora, Athena, etc. When we almost adopted a female Great Dane puppy (black) I wanted to name her Zoey. Black female dog - is it a small dog or large dog? Sometimes that makes it easier to pick a name. Here are some female dog names I've heard: Juno Bailey Shelby Zoey Lola Dakota Denali Cleopatra (Cleo) Leena Arwen Cora Norah

The dog will end up being BIG! Her paws are enormous. Your list is really great Aggs, thanks! Zoey caught my eye and I've always loved Lola but I may want to keep that one for myself when I get another dog

Labs have so much energy that I think that they totally need a name to match! My sister names her labs (both yellow) after sports starts (Payton and Ditka). I think other names that may work are: Snowball Fetch Ricochet Java Sable Luna Raven Or Bagheera the name the black panther in the Jungle Book. (My father in law has multiple labs too - my daughter named two of them Kody and Copper. )

Bring on the suggestions! Just how unique and non-traditional does she want to go? Working in Greyhound Rescue, trust me, I've seen interesting names. A few examples... Attitude (Courtesy of Skittles Greyt Dog!) Lucky Shoe Apple Pie Lost Coin Artist Could Bee Might Bee Busy Bea Apple Dumplin Apple Sider Ja's High Lite SJ Dolly Starz Banjo Fast Lip Cimmaron Windy (Formerly Wind Breaker)

Any distinguishing personality traits? We have a cat named "Gracie" (short for Graceful) because she was an extraordinarily clumsy kitten. Our dogs are "Belle" because she's prissy, and "Loki" because she's trouble. I know one black Lab named "Toast"...as in burned. What kind of names does your sister like? Most people have a preference of some sort, like Aggs' Greek theme and my own aversion to using people names on animals. I have a friend who only uses names from Arthurian literature.

You have to picture yourself on the beach (or any body of water, as labs love the water) and you will be calling out this name! I would try to stick with two syllables....or an "official name" with a nickname for the calling out moments! For example, Mrs. Minniver, short version being Minnie.
We had a black lab+ when we were young. Very bossy. We called him Colonel Licorice...and Licky or Colonel for short... makes me remember this seeing your post.

My husband likes Bella and Maddie. My sister really has no direction she just says "she'll know it when she hears it" which I understand.
As far as character traits, she seems pretty laid back but will get playful with other dogs and is quite the lover. She is really sweet too.
I appreciate all of the suggestions, keep 'em coming!

I'm giving away one I'd like to use one day:
Scout - from To Kill a Mockingbird. I always loved that name.

Nike wouldn't be bad as a greek goddess name, except that it's a corporate shill now...
