I have my choice of two mixers for $100 each on Craigslist (two different sellers). One is my choice color of red in 5qt size, the other is yellow but slightly bigger at 5.5 qt size.

Is there much of a difference between those sizes...enough for me to notice and wish I had goen with the .5qt larger one?

I'd say that the difference is about half a quart.

Tough one. I'd go with the red one because it has the lifting bowl, which I like. But the yellow one also has the feeder shoot. Dang, Dip!! Okay, go with the red one.

You can tell all that from the pics? What's the lifting bowl and what's the feeder shoot?

the red one is heavier 30 pounds as opposed to teh yellow which is abotu 25 pounds

the red one is going to be more heavy duty - the yellow is part of their campaign to make the mixers more family friendly i believe

Id go with the red - looks easier to clean

I have the 5.5 with lifting bowl. I love it! The only two things that would make it better are: 1. if the top of the mixer swung up out of the way, and 2. if it were just a little bit bigger.

I can't look at the links from work, but I'll offer this advice: bigger is almost always better.

The red one has a lever on the side. The shoot is the clear plastic snapped on the bowl. But the former is much more desirable, IMO.

Dip - do some research on the Kitchen Aid site before you buy. Make sure you get what you want. Once you know what you want and can't do without, buy as much as you can afford.

A Kitchen Aid is a lifetime purchase - I'm using my grandmother's that was purchased back in the late 60's; and she did a LOT of baking, and I used to also.

Wife has two, the larger one is very heavy and old the smaller one is new. Both are white so there is realy no difference between them other than the size.

As you are not a guy (not AG although I agree with this post) what color is the kitchen?

I have the snap-on clear guard thingies for mine - never use them. They are supposed to make adding ingredients easier and help keep "splatter" down, but I ended up making a bigger mess with them than without. IMO, they're just one more thing to have to wash.

Someday when I have a bigger kitchen, thsi thign will probably sit on the counter, and my kitchen always has and always will be red. But...if the yellow one really is a better bet, I'm willing to go for it.

The only thing you have to watch with the larger capacity bowl is that the beaters don't always reach the bottom/sides as well. If you tend to bake huge items/batches at a time, go bigger. If not, go with the red one. I like red better than yellow.

I have the small version. No lifting handle, no splatter guards. I love it. It's white and stays out on the counter all the time.
