The K-E Diet: Brides-to-Be Using Feeding Tubes to Rapidly Shed Pounds

snip - Brides-to-be looking to shed that final 10, 15 or 20 pounds in order to fit into their dream wedding gown have taken a controversial approach to crash dieting that involves inserting a feeding tube into their noses for up to 10 days for a quick fix to rapid weight loss.

The K-E diet, which boasts promises of shedding 20 pounds in 10 days, is an increasingly popular alternative to ordinary calorie-counting programs. The program has dieters inserting a feeding tube into their nose that runs to the stomach. They're fed a constant slow drip of protein and fat, mixed with water, which contains zero carbohydrates and totals 800 calories a day. Body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis, which leaves muscle intact, Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., said.

Yeah, except that when you are ketotic, the body scavenges muscle, not fat.
Dr. Oliver is full of it.

I thought our bodies needed at least 1200 calories a day or so just to function???

I wonder how many of these brides passed out on their wedding day?

If it was Dr. Oliver that came up with this, his license needs to be revoked! That is unconscionable for a physician!

Only if you're interested in all of your organs properly functioning smile

Also, feeding tube down the nose, that's hot! I'd think twice about marrying a woman that would go to that extreme! Then again, I'd hope I wasn't with someone that silly in the first place.

Interesting race in TX. The "Orginal Mud Run". While I had a good time, I would not recommend this one. Very poorly run!
1. Packet pickup - One station to look up your name and bib number, one to get your shirt, one to get your chip, another to get your pins and zip ties....really? Any onther race its "Here's my ID, here's your packet, have fun". It took 2 hours to get the packet.
The course - You do not put climbing obstacle 30 yards after a mud obstacle. It remains slick and people fall and get hurt, all day.
Staff - the staff should know where the 5K and 10K courses diverge! Virtually everyone, all day ran a 10K instead of a 5K, because apparently only two staff members knew where the courses changed!
And while I enjoued the challenge of crossing the Trinity river 3 times, 300+ yards of swimming in clothes is a bit much for a lot of folks, if they dont know its going to be there.
I would suggest that, if they dont have a detailed course map, you pass on the race.

Next weekend is Warrior Dash North Texas.
We are also looking at the Caveman Extreme! grin

yes, but per wiki:

If the diet is changed from a highly glycemic diet to a diet that does not provide sufficient carbohydrate to replenish glycogen stores, the body goes through a set of stages to enter ketosis. During the initial stages of this process, blood glucose levels are maintained through gluconeogenesis, and the adult brain does not burn ketones. However, the brain makes immediate use of ketones for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours of this process, the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly use the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles.[7]

I'm sure there is a bride somewhere that has the feeding tube, but removes it three times a day to pound down a few Big Macs and is wondering why it's not working.

My mother worked with a lady who would eat insane amounts of fast food for lunch everyday and wash it down with a Slim Fast shake and wonder why she couldn't lose weight - after all, she was drinking Slim Fast.....

or they go to Wendy's and order a triple, supersized fries, and diet coke...yep, you have sufficiently removed the 500 calories from the 1/2 gallon of coke, but still ingested 2300 from the burger and fries...

You need to try Coke from Mexico. It's made with real sugar and isn't as vile as the gross stuff made here from HFCS.

I don't often drink soda, but when I do I drink the Mexican kind.

Yes, I can get it at the corner store. It usually has a paper sticker listing the ingredients. You want me to send you a bottle?

If you are ever in Atlanta, make a point to tour the Coca-Cola Museum. At the end, there is a tasting room where you can sample Coke products sold all over the world. It's amazing the difference in taste from country to country. There was one from Itally called "Beverly" that everyone was daring each other to try - it was disgusting.

We just heard that one guy drowned during the river crossing in a different wave. That race just did not have sufficient staff.
