Richter scale? Don't just leave us hanging! wink

Babo, if she wasn't OK, I think she's smart enough to get herself to safety and not post on BOL... laugh

Oh yeah, thanks. We're on the 7th floor and the quakes are felt stronger the higher up you are in the building. We were on the 4th floor for several years - I think this is the first time we've had one since we moved to this floor.

That was a 4.5 near Yorba Linda. There was a similar one last night but I slept through it.

mad

Don't you think I know that? BTW, I think most people's priority would be: 1) Check self for injuries; 2) Check others for injuries; 3) Report said injuries on Facebook; 4) Call ambulance; 5) Update BOLers of event; 6) Update Facebook in ambulance.

You're correct, BaBo. Since FB is blocked here and there was no need to call an ambulance, I went directly to step 5.

It felt like a sharp jolt and then rolling where I am. The one last night felt like rolling without the jolt.

Glad your ok!
Our last big one was 6.0. That was pretty exciting for Oklahoma.
The best part about ours was that it happened during a televised OSU football game and the look on Kirk Herbstreit's face was priceless!
Be safe!

There have been a few aftershocks since the 4.5 this morning but I haven't felt any of them. They have been 2.7, 2.8 and 3.4. I'm surprised I didn't feel the 3.4. It occurred less than 20 minutes after the 4.5.

I was on floor 9 here and didn't feel a thing. I was even warned it might be heading my way so I was feeling for it but it never reached San Diego. Better it blow off steam in the 4s than the Big One.

I DO NOT miss the earthquakes in CA.

Having said that, I'm packing up and moving back....guess I'd better brace myself!

If I'm not mistaken, the jolt is the P (primary)wave, followed closely by the S (shear or secondary) wave. I think the longer the time span between the two, the farther away it occurred. The waves travel something like 500mph. I was on the phone with a friend 70 miles away when the 7.0 hit near Fairbanks Alaska in 1999 (I think it was 99). I was in Anchorage and he was in Kenai. The 4' chandalier was swaying 10" from center and the 40 foot spruce trees were swaying back and forth. But it was a gentle swaying - not violent. He said he didn't feel anything and then 20 seconds later it hit Kenai. Pretty funny to experience over the phone.

I believe you are correct, Cornhusker. I felt the rolling motion very soon after the jolt, which makes sense since I am only about 20 miles from the epicenter.

I've always wanted to be in a large open space during an earthquake and see the rippling of the earth.
