As I sit in my office and watch the floats rolling buy heading to the starting point of the parades...7:30 and they are already knocking back the drinks...

For myself, i haven't been to a parade in 3 years, and i grew up loving Mardi Gras, and rarely missed a chance to go out and catch one. I think i've just gotten to the point that it isn't for me anymore. I have a brother that lives here that rides in one of the big parades, this year his son also rode for the 1st time. Another brother flys in from Texas, and his son from Minnesota, to ride as well. I have never had a desire to ride in the parade, i've always enjoyed just fighting everyone for what they throw.
I'm fortunate that I don't work downtown or on any of the suburban parade routes, because that is a huge inconvenience. Many people in NO use this opportunity to go out of town, some ski resorts at this time are about 50% NO people, as are many of the Florida panhandle beaches.
There are many places you can cathc the parades that are family environments, and other places that no one under 18 should ever venture (such as the French Quarter) during Mardi Gras. Everyone can find their balance, mine is to avoid them.
