I mean, chances are it wont be as highly acclaimed as Mockingbird, but still, I'm fascinated by lost works and authors who just kind of walked away from the spotlight.

I did hear last couple of weeks her twin sister had died and left a bunch of personal papers of Ms. Lee's to some school...just don't recall which one.

88 years old and now going to publish another book...good for her

Is that where they re-discovered it?

Her sister, a lawyer, (not twin) died in November at age 103.

"In a statement released this morning, the 88-year-old author explained that when she was just starting off, she wrote “Go Set a Watchman” about a woman nicknamed Scout who returns home to Maycomb to visit her father, Atticus. After reading the manuscript, her editor asked her to rewrite the story from the point of view of Scout as a child. “I was a first-time writer,” Lee said, “so I did as I was told.” The result was “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a novel that has sold 40 million copies since it was first published in 1960.

The original story, “Go Set a Watchman,” was forgotten.

“I hadn’t realized it had survived,” Lee said, “so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

The book and the movie are my all-time favorites. I will certainly be waiting for the new book.

Ditto, califgirl. One of my all-time favorites too. Hopefully this will be out in time to be one of my vacation reads this year. I like to save the best books for a time when I can truly savor them without distraction.

i always wonder what other lost works are out there. Like, i've read that Hemmingway had a trunk full of manuscripts stolen from him at some point. I think some contemporaries mentioned Shakespeare plays that have never been found.


And then to think of the library of alexandria or the ancient and/or biblical stuff that's lost.

then there is also the stance that Shakespeare actually wrote nothing of value, yet put his name to many others works to get them published...

yeah, it's interesting, but i dont buy the Shakespeare truthers. It's a relatively recent theory and the evidence is basically "Come on, a commoner couldn't have written that well"

Actually, I'm excited to get this new book. And re-read To Kill A Mockingbird as an adult.

Dang. It might be something more shady than just re-discovering a lost book.

I'm right there with you Bacon Boy. I haven't read 'To Kill A Mockingbird' since I was in junior high school - and we don't need to mention how long ago that was. I think I'll have to download that to my Kindle after I read the Baldacci book I'm currently into.

Dang, indeed, if this is the truth of the matter.

There is some suspicion as to whether or not Ms. Lee is capable of understanding or knowing what's happening with this. I hope this really IS true - TKAM was such a great novel:
