I just purchased a new PC for home use with a 20 inch monitor - from DELL (1680-1050).

If you are in the market for a new PC, consider at least a 20 inch monitor - awesome.

The last bank I worked a we had 22 inch flat screen CRT monitors. We used to have 4-5 programs visibly running at the same time.

I wish I had a monitor that big for my photos.

And somewhere in there is a computer screen? Are you sure?

Maybe some deep 3D work, like with Maya or Cinema 4D?

Dual monitors are not to be overlooked. I love the extra workspace.

I build my own computers and I am a complete snob about hardware. That being said, the system you have is really a good deal, especially considering the 20" Flatscreen.

You could easily run Battlefield 2 at 1280x1024 and still see everything very clearly.

By way of manufacturer, I reccommend Asus or Abit. I've never had a problem with their mobos and they usually have very good BIOS updates for their boards when new features are developed.

In terms of specs, it's all depending on what you need on the board and what chipset (Intel vs. AMD). As a rule of thumb, I always get boards that have onboard audio, video, and LAN, just in case any of the PCI cards that support those functions become borked (yes, that's a technical term ).

I haven't seen wifi integrated on many mobos yet, but I imagine that is coming down the pipe eventually. I am seeing a lot with gigabit LAN functionality (not that most folks would need it).

I have this magic 8-ball type thing on my desk that I just shake and it gives me a random technical terms or acronym. I then insert the random terms / acronyms into what I'm writing and it makes it sound impressive.

Your confirmation is appreciated. It's interesting how
DELL hides the best deals, in that if you simply go to the DELL site, you will never run into the best deals - you need to do some nerd research - go to sites that find the best deal and provide a link to the DELL page that has the best deal. There seems to be two prices - even when discounts are included - one price for novices and the really good best deal price for people that are willing to do a little research. It's the same as buying retail at a storefront, e.g. Best Buy, etc. It looks like a good deal, but it's not - the web more than likely has it for hundreds less, including shipping. Someone has to pay for the storefront, all the sales people, etc. - but, buying retail is stupid, although really convenient.

My motto is to get a good deal on all small things and save your money for big things.

The thing that usually kills people is the "upgrades". Dells have rather good deals on their PCs when you simply buy them "as is". The second you start customizing the PC, you start paying through the nose.

For example, right now I'm looking at the XPS 600, which has a P4 630 3.0 GHz (800 FSB) processor as the standard. There are plenty of upgrade options available, but let's look at the most expensive one: P4 670 3.80GHz (800 FSB), which costs $700 more to put in the system.

I quickly found the "upgraded" processor for $200 less on the internet, but that's not really the kicker. The kicker is that the difference between a 3.0 and a 3.8 GHz processor is pretty much transparent to the average user, especially considering that bus speed (FSB = Front Side Bus) is just as important, if not more important in terms of how a "fast" a computer runs.

A powerful user (or gamer) might see some difference with .8 GHz; however, it's more economical to dremel holes in your computer case, add a lot of fans, (or a watercooling system) and overclock the processor to squeeze some extra power out of it.

Yes, knowing someone like Chi does help, but most people don't need the fastest PC, just one that is close to the fastest on the retail market - the monitor is a big deal as is memory although memory has really come down in price. Just don't go for the extras and don't upgrade a good deal unless you really require something that is listed. It's the same with cars.

I got a computer from Gateway one year and it SUCKED! It was supposed to be a "gamers" computer, but I can't run anything other than a Barbie game for my kid.

I will check out Dell next time...and look for the hidden deals. Thanks X you're not a crazy as people say.

By the way, love the avatar!

Thanks Builder Chick - nice name!

One site that may help is www.slickdeals.net - they deal primarily with tech stuff and have a lot of DELL stuff listed on occasion. Input is from posters and there are people out there that are as obsessed with finding deals as posters are with this site.

I've also had trouble with Gateway, although I really like the cow packages.

Another 'web shopping' example: Panasonic 37" Widescreen Plasma HDTV - just ordered one for $1,449 (no tax, free shipping) and the same TV, although the old model, is available now at Wal Mart for $2,638 plus tax. Yes, I double checked - it's the same TV. Of course, Wal Mart is very convenient and does have some good deals on primarily small stuff.

If you like to build your own machine or work on other do-it-yourself computer stuff, www.pricewatch.com is a good site to check out.
