Anyone know how to stop a cat from biting?

I have a 1 1/2 year old cat, named Damon, and he should sometimes be called "demon".
He's usually a good boy, but can sometimes bite, and I don't know how to stop it. Anyone know any good methods? I know we have lots of cat-lovers on BOL....
Sometimes he just bites to hold on, and it does not hurt, so that doesn't bother me. It's when he either pounces and attacks (if you walk by him and he's laying on the floor, or when you are playing with him and he jumps at you instead of the toy), or sometimes when he's sitting by you wanting to be petted, he'll bite.
I've tried squirting him with water, and I think he likes that, so that does not work. I've tried time-outs in another room, I've tried clapping or making loud noises, and I've tried grabbing him by the back of the neck (I read that's what mother cats do), and I'm running out of ideas.

It sounds to me like he is confused about what is the toy and what is you.

You need to recondition him to play with toys. My guess is that you played with him in a manner that makes him think are one of his toys.

The only toy that he really likes is one of those string toys on a stick. I know those are bad, but it's the only thing that he really likes, so I just make sure to watch him with it and make sure he doesn't bite any part off.
He already had the biting habit when I got him back in May.

I have a cat that is just like that. He is almost 2 now and still does it. I have tried everything but he won't stop. I can't get rid of him though. I am way to attached!

I had a friend that tried throwing a bag of silverware next to the cat whenever he did something naughty...that worked for her. I know you tried loud noises, but maybe this would be louder???

Be careful with the catnip. I know it used to get my cats really excited and I stopped using it. She got extremely wild.
Sorry I can't help you with the biting. My older cat used to do that when she was young, but the second one never did. Maybe you should consider getting a 2nd cat. That way they can play/fight with each other. It does make a difference.

My cat did not have a biting problem, but the second cat thing sure worked for me. It actually helped in almost every way, except I have to change the litter box twice as often.

This is going to sound really strange - but have you tried biting him back? Our cat used to play ROUGH, and my husband finally bit her back one night (I don't remember if it was an ear or a foot). Not hard, but it got the point across apparently - because now she only bites me. She sleeps on my feet at night and if I move enough to disturb her, she bites my feet. I smack her with a pillow, she gets off the bed, and all is peaceful after that. Getting back to my original point though - the biting during "play time" stopped almost entirely after he returned the favor.

Honestly, I found that immediately smacking the cat on the nose swiftly ended the unwanted biting behavior. They're pretty quick to run the equation that "attack-style biting = bap to the snout = bad".
