We have a new puppy. And puppies chew - yes, I know this. She has everything...kongs, nylabones, rag bones, marrow bones...and rawhide bones. The problem is that she doesnt want to chew on any of her toys. She would rather chew on my son's boots, the electrical cords (dangerous), my daughter's pigtails, the screen door.....the only thing that seems to work is rawhide. I use bitter apple on things, hot pepper, hot sauce, but you cant dump hot sauce on everything!

Well I was recently informed that rawhide is actually bad for dogs because they are bleached and all this other stuff and this person mentioned 'bully sticks' and I dont even know what they are or where to get them(do you?). Anyway, can someone give me any suggestions? HELP!

So Cal
I thought this would be another "What's wrong with people" story about a person who chews on puppies. Whew! :wipes brow:

In hades.
My brother chewed on puppies for years. We finally broke him of the habit by sticking a car battery to the last puppy he ever chewed on. Of course now he just sits around and drools on everything.

I suggest bitter apple on your son's boots, hot pepper on the elctrical cords and hot sauce on your daughter's pigtails. Finish with a nice bottle of chianti!

I only recommend a bully stick if your dog is male and perhaps gender confused

vinegar works good too; its just a phase the chewing will stop

many dogs can't digest rawhide well

if you put hot sauce all over I would be chewing too! I love that stuff

my nickname is bully stick, I didn't know you could buy them

I use the rawhide chews and she likes her Kong as well. Still didn't stop her from chewing on the leg of my antique rocking chair, the power cord to my laptop and the power cord to a lamp (she yipped good on that one!). Oh yeah, she pulled two book markers right out of their books (without disturbing the book) and ate those. She started to go after the shoes but I got after her right away and she gave that game up pretty easily. I also had to put all my floor plants up and any candle that was within her "reach". Obviously I made concessions to her "puppyness" and just put things out of her reach so she had to focus more on her toys rather than on my things. I do a lot of praising for her playing with appropriate toys.

I'm sorry, I don't have a foolproof solution for you. I watched her like a hawk for a long time and still go searching for her if things are too quiet. I think that getting her out for walks helps because it seems like destructive stuff starts happening when she has too much pent up energy.

I also have heard bad things about the digestability of rawhide bones. Our pugs love them, but we finally stopped buying them because they would try to swallow the dumb things before they were small enough to swallow. . .and commenced gagging, coughing, and eventually either throwing them up or we would have to try to reach in there and pull them out. Yuck!

If the puppy is getting into trouble while out of your sight, you might consider using baby gates to keep the dog where you (or a family member) are. Unfortunately, we have to do this because my male pug pees on stuff as soon as he is out of our sight. He is a rescue, so I try to be a patient and tolerant mother!

Watch some "Dog Whisperer" for inspiration with a new puppy! He has some great methods that really work.

The biggest key to stopping ANY unwanted behavior is supervision.

Here are a couple good links.

Ummm, I wasn't sure what bully sticks were so I looked it up. I think I'll take my chances with the rawhide chews...

I have used the bully sticks (they're also called 'pizzle sticks') for my cattle dog because she's such an aggressive chewer that she cracks bones and tries to swallow rawhides whole.
They are fairly long lasting, and don't smell bad (as far as some of those things go ). She loves them, and don't seem to sliver off or break apart as easily as other things I've tried.

If you haven't figured out what they are yet, PM me They're, um, a certain part of a bull's/steer's anatomy that is fairly long.

I googled to see where you could buy them, and the Jumbo Sized Bully Sticks are temporarily out of stock. IT also mentioned that Jumbo Size bully sticks are getting harder and harder to find. I have the same problem myself!! LOL

Where do you get them? Can you get them at Pet Quarters?

I'm not familiar with Pet Quarters (must be a regional store), but PetSmart usually has them. And Chuck'n'Don's.
If you have Fleet Farm where you are, that's where they're the cheapest (around here, anyways).

Pig Ears work well too as approved chew toys.

My vet actually said that pigs ears are the worst as far as danger of intestinal obstruction, so I've tried to avoid those.
I guess all of the chew things can be dangerous, and everyone seems to have their preference (including vets). I just try to supervise no matter what I give my dogs, and take things away when they get too small (or sliver, or crack).

Hooves are also long lasting, but they smell AWFUL. They are pretty easy to find, though. My dog's favorite toy was a rope with a hoof on it, but I finally had to give in and throw it away because the stench was just horrible...

Wow, I've never had a vet who didn't tell me to use pig ears over rawhide. But I never allow chewing without supervison. Heck, I rarely allow ANYTHING without supervision with my dogs or my kids.

Oh, and you are oh so right about hooves. Stinky!

I'm still trying to get over the bully stick thing. I mean how would you ever decide to use that for a dog toy?!?!?

Although, when I had my horse gelded I remember the vet tossing the sack and all to the dog. Maybe there's a market there...

I know, right?
Hmmm, I just cut this thing off, let's see if the dog wants to chew on it!

BTW, QueenBee, Fleet Farm has the jumbo sized ones on a regular basis (I work there sometimes on weekends, and the bins are always full)...

Well, they sell a lot of them. You should hear the names that people ask for them by.
